It's truly baffling when people have these ideas about computers like, "manufacturers should just make ram faster to match CPU speed, then we won't need latency hiding techniques in CPUs". Huh, how did nobody ever think of this. Just make it faster.
@dotstdy It's the old "why do they put in bugs which they then later have to fix? Don't put in bugs in the first place."
@molecularmusing in terms of software it's often defensible in that like, okay sure if you have something completely not optimized you can often make huge improvements without much work. BUT it falls apart when you're talking about something which has been the focus of huge, sophisticated optimization effort for decades... :')
@dotstdy Orange site? Where? Also, it exists, for those willing.to pay for HBM, at least BW wise :)
@damageboy that's the opposite of what they're talking about! in this case they want ultra low latency so that you don't need to do speculative execution anymore. :')
@damageboy back in my day CPUs had one cycle access to RAM etc etc
@dotstdy Ah, it's the star trek variant of HW architecture, gotcha
@dotstdy just make the CPU much slower. Problem solved!
