@liiwi @RickiTarr @waitworry My cat is a rescue, & so when I first brought to my vet, they just arbitrarily assigned her a birthday. I could never remember what day that was until I learned than April 25 is also the day of the Carnation Revolution; which marked the end of a decades-long fascist regime & the return of democracy to Portugal.
I have no idea why this coincidence makes me so happy, but it does.
@Gorfram While technically April 25th is NOT Portugal's Independence Day (that would be December 1st, it marks the second Portuguese independence, when we finally got rid of the Spanish rulers in 1640), April 25th is still a very important day for us Portuguese people.
It was the day in 1974 when a bloodless coup (well, mostly, there were a few people who died) ended a right-wing dictatorship that had been going on since 1926. So, not an independence day (though that also started the process of independence of the Portuguese colonies), but still a day of major significance for Portugal.
So your kitty shares a birthday with the return of democracy to Portugal, which is awesome :D
@nanianmichaels Please forgive my misunderstanding: I've edited my post.
My reading of Portuguese history is sketchy at best, so thanks for filling me on that and on the end of Spanish rule. As it turns out, December 1 is also my grandmother's birthday.
*to the best of my knowledge, my family history doesn't otherwise involve Portugal much. Grandma was also born somewhat later than 1640.
@Gorfram Oh, don't worry about it.
That someone not from Portugal took the time to find out something about that date is already amazing.
I just wanted to clarify a bit, since, well, I'm from Portugal :P
And April 25th is debatably a more important date these days. It has a much bigger social projection, and commands more celebration than December 1st.
