Man, being old is weird. I'm old enough to remember when "anyone can be President" was a statement of hope and aspirations rather than the opening line of a horror novel.
@dhw To be fair, it is an excellent opening line for a horror novel.
@fuzzybinary Too soon. Accurate, but too soon.
@dhw
I do still remember, as a teenager, staring in disbelief at Ronnie Raygun on the TV. From the safety of my own country it was easy to laugh - then.

@dhw

"Since World War II being an American has been easy.

We had defeated our enemies from without, and rested in the comforting knowledge that our Constitution would prevent attacks from within.

But we were wrong.

In truth the one most powerful position in our government was left dependent upon the honor system.

And a patriotic president.

So that when we elected an autocratic unpatriotic dishonorable president, there were no clear constitutional laws to constrain him."

@dhw Remember in 1960 we had a YOUNG president? Sure he had his faults but he managed to stop the Cuban missile crisis without invading. Shame what happened to him.

A similar thought occurred to Bizarro’s Dan Piraro (https://www.bizarro.com/blog) after tfg ended up in the Oval…

@Laloofah @dhw wasn’t it Vonnegut who said that true terror is the realization that your high school class is now running the country?
@dhw Like something out of a Stephen King novel. Oh, waitaminute...

@dhw

In an ideal scenario the worst person in the world and the President of the United States would be two different people.

What a shithole of a country.

@dhw Well, some people were so mad that Obama could be president that they destroyed the disease surveillance he negotiated and a million Americans died. Some people thought it was a horror story to have a black president.
@dhw It's scary how this applies equally well also on Slovak presidential situation. 😨
@dhw don’t remember where I read it but something along the lines of “the problem with ‘anyone can be president’ is that it’s true.”
