Reading some late 50s French sci-fi, wondering if this jungle world being fought over by powerful alien civilizations (Human & other) is a thinly-veiled reference to French Indochina. Then I notice that the name of the semi-mythological king who reappears out of the ancient past to kick all the offworlders' asses, "Safass-Thin", rhymes with "Ho Chi Minh".

So there's that.

@davefischer Was the author over there during the French occupation there? I’m reminded that David Drake said some of the “Hammers Slammers” stories were his attempt to come to grips with his experiences in Vietnam as a translator attached to an armored unit.
