Question for #trans folk who take #progesterone :

Is it just me, or is starting on prog a lot like PMS as far as the emotions are concerned? Yes, it's been a rough week, for unrelated reasons. But I've really been having a rough time emotionally this week too. I'm crying at the drop of a hat. Could it be stress from the other events? I'm sure that contributes. But this isn't how I usually process stress.

I mean, seriously, this ride is no fun, and I'm tempted to get off at the next stop. (as in stopping prog, not any other inferred meaning). My doctor warned me about depression as a possible side effect. I'm not depressed, just "hormonal" as men tend to accuse women of being.

Is this an acclimation period that will ultimately subside? I know other meds have such periods. Do I just need to ride this out?

@janetlogan I know it’s not quite the same, but I know when I was on a specific progesterone-only pill (as cis-woman for contraception) it massively impacted my mood and mental state. Looking at you, Noriday 😒

I was encouraged to try to stick with it and told that it may subside but after 6 or 7 months it was just miserable so I tried other brands / types and eventually found one that was better. (1/2)

I’m conscious though I don’t know a huge amount about the use of progesterone in gender-affirming HRT so I don’t know how many different options there are available to you? (2/2)

@charllthomas

Charlotte, I'm sorry you had that experience. I am certainly glad you found something that did work for you.

@siege (CJ Bellwether) wrote an excellent summary of why progesterone for GAHT. It's really the only option for the needs I have, and if it means a few days of emotional PMS every month, then I will gladly accept that.

Charlotte: I dug into Noriday, and found that it is a synthetic progestogen, which we are very specifically cautioned against. For GAHT, it must be bio-identical progesterone (brand name Prometrium in my case).
