@mcourcel and there is still a synthesizer category and the evaluation form still asks about external speech synthesizers as an option for this equipment. wonder if you can buy one at all. maybe a tripple talk usb?
@bmoore123 Nope. Checked for DoubleTalk USB a few days ago. I was feeling nostalgic. Now the company only sells the chips. So I guess you could still build one.
@mcourcel I still have one but haven't used it in years. not sure any screen reader supports it now.
@bmoore123 I have an old bookport that uses the doubletalk speech. It's fun to play around with it sometimes.
@mcourcel yep, have one of those too. still like it although voice dream has better voices and actually doesn't need that weird software to load books onto it
@bmoore123 @mcourcel DoubleTalk had one of the most robotic sounds, but it ended up becoming one of my favorite synths. I think it was because even though it was clear, it didn't really have any emotion, so I could more easily make my own intrepretation of the text it was reading. I had one of the original BookPort deviceds from APH, and that thing went everywhere with me, along with spare AA batteries. I read more text-based books and/or braille with that thing! But, you couldn't pay me a million dollars to spend a day listening to eSpeak these days!
@technolass @bmoore123 Yeah, E-Speak is a whole bunch of special. Yup, that's the one I was referring to. I still have the other one they released later on. I should opena muesum. Lol! I used to have The Appolo Synth, which at the time sounded amazing! But it didn't have indexing, so that was an issue.
