60 years ago today, they murdered my protector

Friends, I’ve shared some of this with you, but today marks 60 years since it happened — when the Klan murdered my protector. I was always the shortest kid in school, which made me an easy target for bullies. To protect myself, I got into the habit of befriending older boys who’d watch my back.

Sending warm thoughts to you on this day.
@rbreich
Thank you for telling the story of this martyr, Robert.

@rbreich

I am so very sorry. Thank you for sharing Michael Schwerner's story. We should all honour the Mickeys of this world.

@rbreich this made me so sad when I read it and it made me mad. Aren’t we supposed to be moving forward from stuff like this? It seems lately we are sliding backwards.
@rbreich Excellent article Dr. Reich. Thank you for publishing this on the #Fediverse

@rbreich Baruch Dayan Ha’Emet, Robert.

This murder is the subject of a famous painting by Norman Rockwell: https://www.nrm.org/MT/text/MurderMississippi.html

and also fictionalized in the film “Mississippi Burning”.

Murder in Mississippi

@rbreich
stunning and tragic, thank you for sharing. Those young white people who stood up against racism in the early 60s have my greatest admiration and respect.

@rbreich

That's what another Trump presidency means, letting bullies rule over us all, permanently.
