2/3 #Ashbee . I am intrigued by 'hinge' lives which began firmly in the C19 and end, later than you expect, in the C20. I have always liked this building but knew little about Ashbee; who was bisexual, queer . . . close to Edward Carpenter. Amazed to learn about his work in #Jerusalem for the Pro-Jerusalem Society. His report, 1920-22, appears to be readable and detailed. Here it is: https://archive.org/details/jerusalem192019200ashbuoft/page/n7/mode/2up

3/3 #CRAshbee. Here's a book of Ashbee's poems, from 1906, with some Whitechapel references -- the Guild and School of Handicraft was based there. The #queer codewords he preferred were 'comrade' and 'comradeship'. I learned most about queer life in this period from Sheila Rowbotham's wonderful book on Edward Carpenter. https://archive.org/details/echoesfromcityof00ashb/mode/2up
