I entitle this piece "Portland"
@left_adjoint My first day living in Chicago (having moved from Seattle where things are very similar) I went to the nearest coffee shop and witnessed a down-on-his-luck-looking guy being given a glass of water and not hassled about taking up a table for as long as he wanted. The restroom didn't require any key or code or anything like that. And I swear I let out a breath I'd been holding for more than four years.
@klara you're reaffirming my belief that if I ever need to move out of portland chicago is probably where I'd go

@klara @left_adjoint Same, when I first came to Chicago I got funny looks from everyone the first time I asked for the bathroom key at a Starbucks. My wife still makes fun of me for it.

(that's not to say NO place in Chicago requires codes to get into bathrooms... of course, it's mostly in the neighborhoods you'd expect. But it's better than Portland is about it, at least.)

@left_adjoint seattle is the same though
