I continue to be saddened by the shift to MTX and Skinner box mechanics in mobile gaming. The once-great #TinyTower from #Nimblebit is an instructive case. It started with a single, steep payment for a VIP pass, and that was it. It now has pushing a dozen different currencies, multiple tiers of daily, weekly, weekend offers, and has long-since pivoted to extract as much from the player/customer as possible.
So why do I continue to play? Sunk cost, I ponied up for the one-off $25 (1/x)
… $25 (and even that was half-price!) because @nimblebit (that’s probably not their official account) were a great developer back in the day (they collaborated with @Graham_LRR , clearly they had taste).
So as I set little targets for myself for gameplay and avoid yet more of the predatory sales tactics, I feel old, missing the buy-once method of mobile gaming.
