It’s 1994 Week in Fast Company’s tech section! Here’s my story on the year of Peak CD-ROM, based in part on 30-year-old Word documents of my own I somehow never trashed. Among the topics covered: Encarta and its rivals, the curse of shovelware, and the birth of San Francisco’s Multimedia Gulch. https://www.fastcompany.com/91128052/history-of-cd-roms-encarta-myst

@bobthomson70 I mention getting laid off from Computer Buying World in my story, but don’t mention getting hired at PC World, which turned out to be pretty important.
@harrymccracken that's a great origin story indeed. Any mention of CD-ROM and 1994 reminds me of the joy of getting my Mitsumu drive on my Gateway 2000 to work with Yggdrasil Linux : / Not such good times lol Said PC came with Windows 11 and Encarta.
