This is cool: Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand are building out a distributed storage network with eight sites built on Māori land to give “iwi and hapū the power to control and make decisions over their own data.”

@parismarx When you said 'storage' I first thought about grain, mead and dried peas and such.
@parismarx Definitely cool. I wonder if running one or more Fediverse nodes is in their future.
@parismarx but, what kind of data, though. The article seems a bit vague about the nature of data stored in these data centers. Either that or I lost something in the Māori.
@dexterous any data to do with the iwi (people/tribes)

@flamed I. Sorry if I sound dense, but that still doesn't quite explain it? Are we talking about things like land deeds and tax revenues? Or like personal medical histories? Or both?

Because I'm sure it wouldn't be social, cultural information as it doesn't make a lot of sense siloing that. You'd want that disseminated all over.

@flamed

It's just that I'm having a hard time figuring out what sort of private data regarding the entirety of the iwi people we're looking at that warrants multiple data centers.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to belittle the iwi or their data. I'm just having a hard time reconciling the apparent scale of the endeavour and the size of the data it's I tended for.

I'm genuinely curious as to how that circle gets squared. That's all.

@dexterous Any data their various organisations might need to store. The data storage provider doesn't need to specify the scope of what that might be, they're just offering a way for it to be under sovereign control.
