Hogwarts Legacy fans rejoice as new Harry Potter game officially announced for September - programming.dev

I bought Hogwarts Legacy against my better judgement, and the game had one of the worst main stories I’ve ever played. Honestly exploring the world was more fun than the story, and you can only do so much exploring.

Yeah, the main story was pretty terrible. The console controls for broom flying were also criminally bad.

I really liked the combat, though, and exploring the world was nice. Playing some of the puzzles was also fun. Even though the collect-them-all achievements were extremely vast (so much so that I didn’t even both trying for any of them when I found how ridiculously tedious it would have been to go after them), it wasn’t a deep game. But it was fun for a short time.

I liked the little “rpg-lite” elements thrown around like getting to snack on candy and drinking butter beer and such. They really should’ve leaned more into that, but who knows what was going on behind the scenes with WB and all.

I’m all for another game in the franchise, but quidditch isn’t a very compelling part of the world for me.

as a sports game, quidditch feels shaky. its fine for narrative purposes, but it’s not a real sport. so I’m not sure how they will build it into one.

Afaik there are people actually playing quidditch, brooms and all. So there must be something playable there

I always thought the whole point of quidditch was to put the protag as the most important position in the game.

but yeah I’ve seen “quidditch” being played. I’m just not certain how compelling it is without a protagonist player.

I could see a quidditch game kinda work if it was like a hero shooter or whatever. Each team has a roster of certain characters with different stats to fulfill the different roles. There could be a snitch, but just make it so incredibly fast that it comes down to pure luck if you happen to catch it. Or just make different playable modes like “no snitch” and “with snitch”.

I have played quidditch, with the broom.

I spent more time trying not to trip over said broom than actually playing. And I’m somewhat athletic. It wasn’t great.

There are also people pretending to be mermaids. That doesn’t mean it actually works.

That’s quite besides my point but I’ll answer in two ways:

Firstly what defines “working” isn’t really your choice. If the goal is to have fun the silliest stuff can be called “working”. If the goal is to escape reality for a bit then pretending to be a mermaid might be quite effective.

Secondly, my point was just that there is a game, played by people that are probably enjoying themselves, which could probably be translated into a Video game. Just like any other sports.

Seems like a lot of folks are not really interested in the quirky sport, so saying fans are rejoicing because of this announcement sounds like they don’t really understand why people played HL.

Its like saying Dark Souls fans rejoice because From Software announced a fitness spinoff called Yoga with Solaire. Okay actually, they might. Bad example.

I went to ddg looking for yoga with solaire and then found nothing and was heartbroken.

but yeah I’m a huge HL and HP fan in general and I’m planning to skip this one because I don’t really care about quidditch. its only real interest to me was as a cool plot tool. nothing more.

Honestly they could’ve had a quidditch minigame in HL. The two that are in it are fun, but they either need to be replayable without having to start a whole new story, or add more minigames based around causing mischief and having fun with your wizard friends.

“Ramirez has caught the parking lot frog” sums it up so succinctly.

I want them to make a Harry Potter souls like. Let me play as one of the Marauders during the first Wizarding War.
Oohhh Sirius would be the best choice I think, so it can go on after James’s death and you can confront Peter at the end
Oh god just remembering the vitriol from legacy’s launch is tiring
Fuck terfs
Agreed but what does that have to do with a work created by a team of hundreds of people?
nothing whatsoever. but they need to feel important about something, I suppose.
Put simply, a terf owns the IP, money flows back to her. Outright denial of this fact is borderline transphobic itself.
That’s a huge stretch.
Not at all. In fact, denial is a common tactic. See the “racism doesn’t exist” crowd for a prime example. I think you’ll find it’s full of racists.

Alright so first off; denying your incorrect claim that she makes money from this game is not the same as “outright transphobia”. That statement is actually deranged.

Secondly, WB owns the rights to HP games, as mentioned elsewhere in the comments.

This hill isn’t the one to die on, my guy.

I don’t know if you’re just confidently incorrect or intentionally lying, but either way, you’re wrong. Rowling owns the rights to the Harry Potter IP, a fact that can easily be verified using multiple sources with a simple search. As such, she makes royalties on every single use of the IP.
Gee, what could a game in ab I.P. created by a terf have to do with terfs? Scientists will ponder this for years. I mean, it’s not like J.K. Rowling owns the I.P. and makes millions of dollars per year from things like this, right?

Anticipation is building around the upcoming video game "Hogwarts Legacy" but her online opponents are worried about how much she'll profit from sales.

Here’s a video about the Harry Potter IP. Like who owns the rights to the games, books, plays, and so on.

Looks like WB haves the right to the games. So they get most of the money from the games. Rowling owns the rights to the books and plays.

So, you’re just going to ignore the hundreds of game makers who worked on the game and don’t share her views?
Where does the money flow, mother fucker?

Where does the money flow, bud?

A lot of people. Artists, programmers, voice actors, designers etc. So what if some fraction goes to a bigot? I’m not allowing her to live rent-free in my head and control my purchases like you are.

What a long-winded way of telling me you want to support transphobia.

Do you pay taxes? Guess you love Nazis. Pieces of shit are everywhere and it’s not possible to boycott them all. Yes, this game is a luxury. Yes, you can still be a good person if you buy it.

Given Rowling’s existing wealth and influence I think the world is better off with the game than without it. It’s not like this marginal increase in money will allow her to create a disproportionate amount of hate she is not already doing. You are why people make fun of cancel culture. If you want allyship you should pick better battles. It’s possible to be intolerant of intolerance and still purchase this game.

And I say this as someone who never liked Harry Potter and thought the game was average (way too easy except for the very last boss fight).

Ya know what the absolute funniest thing about this is? This all started with the question of “What does transphobia have to do with Harry Potter?”

Can’t help but notice that every answer but mine has been “nothing.” Super interesting response right there. And every response to my explanations that, yes, Rowling is a transphobe, and yes, she does profit from this, has been overwhelmingly negative. Super duper interesting I’d say.

To summarize this thread, “Yeah, fuck transphobia, but fuck you if you remind me that it is, in fact, relevant to Harry Potter!”

My opinion is more nuanced than that and if you don’t see it, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s because you are facing a literal existential crisis because half the American government wants you dead. It’s very easy to lash out and take extreme stances when backed into a comer like this - it’s part of why I urged you to pick better battles so that you don’t alienate your allies.

I was pretty clear about Rowling being a piece of shit.

I see your position, my response was more a vent about the thread in general up to this point, and people like Nima up there, who would prefer to pretend the matter doesn’t exist at all. I wouldn’t consider people like that allies. They’re closer to the group of racists who like to claim that racism doesn’t exist any more.

The fact is, that was my point from the beginning. It literally started with “No, Harry Potter and transphobia are not totally separate issues,” (albeit in a sarcastic manner returning the energy I was initially met with) which is a concept that immediately drew vitriol.

Your response seemed genuine, but also seemed to miss the point, which is why you caught my venting.

don’t waste your time with these weirdos. they throw around labels of transphobia for daring to disagree with anyone that doesn’t share their narrow, obsessive world views.
My replies aren’t for the troll’s benefit, but to give context to undecided lurkers.
If the lurkers don’t agree with you, does that make them trolls too?
Being a lurker and being a troll are mutually exclusive. When you start being a troll, you are no longer a lurker.
i bet she owns some stock in a corporation you shopped at this week better watch out transphobe
Yawn
Just admit you’re transphobic, it’s a lot easier.
I’m transphobic because I don’t partake in perpetual mob outrage?
You’re borderline if you’re happy to sit around and pretend it has nothing at all to do with Harry Potter as a series.
Did I do that?
Well, someone said terfs had nothing to do with Harry Potter, I said the IP is owned by a terf who makes millions from it, and you said “Yawn,” so… Yeah, pretty much.
Delusional.
The art of the denial

Racism denial is a political strategy and a coping tool for those who benefit from or are unwilling to confront racism in our society.

So it begins…again.
Hogwarts legacy was generic crap.
