When you see protestors wearing masks, a big reason is COVID.

The right lies that it's only to hide identities, so they can ban masks and make protesting illegal.

Leftists need to stop repeating right-wing talking points. Always point out mask wearing is also due to COVID!

To be clear, people should have the right to wear a mask BOTH for health reasons and to protect against surveillance and doxxing.
But when you fail to mention COVID as one of the big reasons protestors wear masks in addition to surveillance, it makes it easier for authorities to ban them, and also erases the ongoing state-sanctioned harm that is being caused by lack of public health measures against COVID.
@luckytran what's doxxing? Never heard of that term before.
@luckytran Here in Germany, wearing masks at protests has been illegal since the 1980s - West Germany, that is, it has always been illegal in East Germany, but then again, protests were entirely illegal over there unless orchestrated by the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei,
Socialist Unified Party) government. For a while at the beginning of the pandemic, wearing medical masks at protests was tolerated by the police despite being illegal, but not anymore.
@LordCaramac @luckytran Untrue, German police allows FFP2/3 masks.
@luckytran so they can march around in their hooded capes saying “neener-neener we can do what you can’t!”
@luckytran I would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if they were wearing n95 masks at the demonstrations I have seen (even in person).

@galad @luckytran even if the protestors you saw were wearing masks that don't prevent COVID just to hide their identity, making it out to be the only reason protestors wear masks will still hurt immunocompromised people like me who wear effective masks everywhere (and almost inevitably end up sick for a week+ when we don't).

Besides, privacy is a safety issue. Protestors should have the right to safety, whether from COVID or from cops or from random people seeing videos of the protest online.

@luckytran
Masks don't stop you from being identified. It is the area around the eyes that is most significant anyway. Wearing a mask only stops one thing. Infections.

Think your mask makes you invisible to facial recognition? Not so fast, AI companies say

The future of facial recognition technology may depend on one very specific part of the face: the area around the eyes.

@luckytran Sorry to go off topic, but I'm not sure where else to ask. Does anybody know of somewhere that will give a second dose of the current (winter 2023) covid vax to someone under 65? I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I'm willing to pay cash, but the pharmacist I tried looked me up in the state database and said she's not allowed to do it because I'm under 65 and therefore invulnerable to disease or something I guess.

@luckytran

I hope it's not just around COVID, but rather disease in general.
