There’s a site I’ve been trying to recall for a while now: a design-specific discussion forum I was using maybe ten or so years ago. One of its distinguishing characteristics was that users could draw their own avatars using an icon editor—16x16, I think. New users were limited to black and white pixels only, but the more you used the site, the more colors you had access to. (They offered additional colors as rewards for other things as well.)

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

@csilverman i haven't, but i adore that user reward system
@vga256 I've never seen it anywhere else. It was such a cool little feature.

@justin I don't think so. I loved k10k, and the custom-icon thing sounds like something they would have done, but I don't remember that they had a forum. Also, the aesthetic that I recall wasn't the k10k bitmap style—it was just the avatars that were bitmaps.
@csilverman I may be misremembering, but did Designer News allow that?

@jabronus Yes!! Great memory. That was it: https://www.designernews.co

Any idea what happened to it? I haven't heard about Designer News in years. I assume it's defunct; neither that site nor the Internet Archive are loading at the moment, so I can't tell when (or if) it went offline.

Thank you! It was annoying me that I couldn't remember it.

@csilverman huzzah! I think it died back in February after being sold to WeWorkRemotely
I did a little design work for DN back in like 2016 when they were acquired by Tiny (and I was working at Metalab)
@jabronus Nice. What were you working on?
@csilverman Did some layout work, as well as some illustration: https://dribbble.com/shots/2090042-Good-News-Everyone

@jabronus These are great! That must have been a fun project.

@csilverman yes, it sounds familiar.

No, I can’t find it either 😭
