On this day in 2007, I recorded a particularly awesome thunderstorm using a home-made Jecklin disk, an Edirol R1, and a pair of modified Panasonic microphones. The microphones were completely exposed to the elements, and the recorder was wrapped in three layers of zip-lock bag inside a cooler to keep it dry.

This is one of my favorite field recordings that I've captured myself. Poor Boots the dog, though, left out there all alone...

@BorrisInABox A really clear and nice recording. I should really bother to set up an outside mic thingie at some point. We get lots of these super loud thunderstorms.
@misterkrabs It's funny. That was one of the worst digital recorders I ever had in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, headroom, gain staging and all that. Actually, it was my very first solid-state recorder after moving away from Minidisc.
It could have been better with better gear, but often, it's just about knowing how to use what you've got to the best.
