I had the impression that people running for office were being assassinated a lot, if she is real force for good then I hope she’s safe

That happened in small cities and some hot states. They’d never dare to attack directly a Presidential Candidate.

Why? Are they afraid UN peace keeping forces would be deployed or that the US would step in?

The last time Mexican Cartels pissed the USA off, the largest cartel in Mexican History got shafted. So yeah, they are pretty afraid of direct US involvement.
