Having given up on Facebook years ago because of my concerns about privacy, I rarely login now.

This is a heads up about Meta, privacy, and your data.

From 26 June 2024, Facebook will use your photos, posts, and other info to train its AI.

You can opt out...but Meta has intentionally made it complicated!

Here is a detailed “How to opt out” with screenshots.

Unsurprisingly, given it's owned by Meta, Instagram is jumping on the AI bandwagon and this is particularly worrying…

Attached: 1 image honestly feel like I'm losing my fucking mind reading this shit. how does this make any fucking sense? you send an AI bot to a video meeting you're not attending where presumably other coworkers will also send their bots?????? to what fucking end? what is the point of this? why are we having NPCs video chat with eachother? what gets done with this? what is the purpose? how is this not just a fucking email? is this what jokerfication is? this doesn't make any fucking sense!

LASERDISC 💿 PARTY

@TCMuffin I went through this the other day when I had the message through about them using my data. I copy and pasted a generic 'I do not give permission for you to use this data because of *insert privacy law of your country here* type thing, and within a minute had a response saying they were going to honour my request to opt out. Lord knows if they'll actually stick by that, but it's peace of mind, isn't it.

Thanks for creating and sharing such a detailed "How To".

@lexicaleigh

I'm just so ticked off with Meta needing an "opt out" rather than an "opt in" which goes against all the priciples of GDPR 😡

And you know I'm a "detail woman" 🫢

@TCMuffin It's INFURIATING. I still have facebook ONLY because I've 2 good friends who I can only natter to via messenger, they don't have any other messaging app we could use instead.
@TCMuffin I also got the reply that this was not available in my area. I'm guessing because we're in the US.
@TCMuffin Can we not even opt out of Meta’s AI training in #Canada? What is going on here #Facebook? #cdnpoli #privacy
@rhtunstall @TCMuffin I couldn’t ’get there’ either 😠

@annecavicchi @rhtunstall

Sadly, it seems the abiity to opt out is only available in the EU and UK.

So far, it seems to be unavailable in Canada, the US and Austarlia 😡

@TCMuffin that does not seem to work with my account in Wales. Don’t have the same options you’re quoting.

@ceri

Are you connecting via a VPN?

@TCMuffin No. I don’t have a large amount of content stored there so personally undisturbed but not good that it is so difficult to opt out of.

@ceri

I agree! I’ll be downloading all my Facebook data and deleting all from Facebook as I don’t trust them an inch 🤦

@TCMuffin I haven’t touched anything Zuckerberg in many many years now.
@TCMuffin I’m also seeing “This information is not available in your area.” in Australia. So it seems it’s either very region specific, limited to certain accounts or they’ve pulled it because people are opting out (which obviously wasn’t the point for them 👿)

@aradke

I’ll have a look and see if they’ve pulled it when I’m on my laptop 👍

@TCMuffin Thanks very much for this. Just went through it and received a notification back. Have passed it on to family who are on FB too.
@TCMuffin I took a shortcut. I backed up my data and can delete my account in a matter of seconds, when the desire comes to me. Imagine FB training on data that is meant to be private. I don't know why people use IG, FB and threads. If FB did not have a monopoly I would have deleted my account years ago.
@TCMuffin @chris i wonder if “we will honour your objection” are just weasel words?
Ie they mean “while we process your data we will nod thoughtfully that you objected to this”
It doesn’t actually say “you are now opted out”

@leadegroot @chris

I wondered this too when I read Facebook’s reply 🫣

@TCMuffin I already deleted my FB account way before these AI hype.
But I think it doesn't matter, my data probably will be kept stored wether or not I deleted my acc
@TCMuffin , before you delete fb or stop using it you can request to download all info stored about you.
I wanted to do that and got a message they were unable to comply because I was hacked (that was after they imposed nearly a year of ban because i was active posting news about Israels ongoing genocide).
@TCMuffin They will do it anyways, I'm pretty sure. This is just a show.
@TCMuffin "funny" thing is that I cannot do that opt-out as I haven't accepted the permission to use my data on advertising :O

@TCMuffin

for people who dislike typing.

cut n paste version of the objection from images 3 & 4

Also if the search doesnt show the 'how can i object' link, change the first word in search to "objections" and it should show up.

Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.

@TCMuffin oh one more thing. You should post to Facebook you know, where all the Facebook users are. ✌️🖖
@TCMuffin Went through all that a week or two ago, got a pretty quick accepted response to not use my data and now every time I do an initial page load/refresh I get this. Yay (on any FB page)
@TCMuffin When they announced this last year, I just fucking deleted my account. Customer service at the time was saying that you could only opt-out if personally-identifiable information (like your home address) was showing up unmodified in their LLM output.

@TranshumanBlues

Sadly, it seems the abiity is only available in the EU and UK.

So far, it seems to be unavailable in the US and Austarlia 😡

@TCMuffin hello do u no if they can still use your pics if your account is disabled?

@whitenight12

I don't, but my guess would be that they can 😖

@TCMuffin blah time to go delete it
@whitenight12 @TCMuffin they will probably still have and use your data then. But yes.

@whitenight12

The Instagram warning is even more concerning...

Even if you don't use our Products and services or have an account, we may still process information about you to develop and improve Al at Meta...WTF 😡

For example, this could happen if you appear anywhere in an image shared on our Products or services by someone who does use them or if someone mentions information about you in posts or captions that they share on our Products and services.

@TCMuffin Same for Meta's other products?

@OpenSciTwente

AFAIK, yes. Instagram’s is particularly worrying with its “Even if you don’t use our Products or services…”

@TCMuffin You must live in a decent country. Here in the USA you're greeted with "This information is not available in your area." when you finally find the objections page.

@scott

I’m in the UK and as far as I know, the option to opt out is only in the EU and UK.

Australia, Canada, and the US don’t seem to have the option 🤬

@TCMuffin I tried to delete my account yesterday but despite several attempts it just comes up "something went wrong"

This is the brutal face of big tech: users are profit fodder, prisoners.

@TCMuffin In Canada, there is no option to object.

@WJBL

It’s seems the option to object only applies to the EU and UK.

Others based in Australia, Canada, and the US have said they don’t have the option 😣

@TCMuffin I tried to follow your instructions but I guess I wasn't accurate enough. What a pain! I'll have to try again

@sugarpopspete

It may be because it seems you're in Canada 🤔

It seems the option to object only applies to the EU and UK.

Others based in Australia, Canada, and the US have said they don’t have the option 😣

@TCMuffin I am in the US. Even using a VPN to tell Facebook I'm in the U.K. does not work!

@ASegar

I did wonder if using a VPN would get around the geographic block🤔

@TCMuffin I guess FB knows I live in the U.S. and ignores my server IP origin.
@TCMuffin And remember, anything used to train AI can be revealed by AI. Meta is converting every private group and private message to a broadcast.
