Capitalism is a bourgeois dictatorship. A lot of people don't realize that they're currently living under a dictatorship right now and are deluded into believing that they're living in a free country. No one is free under capitalism, except for the capitalists and the rich, of course.

@Radical_EgoCom isn't "bourgeois" the "middle" class? I think of people in middle management being bourgeois. Basically all the people on "Ark B" when the Golgafrinchens flee their doomed planet for a "less doomed one." [Perhaps obscure and misspelled #TheHitchhikersGuide reference.] I'd say capitalism breeds more of an oligarchy, but I'm splitting hairs.

@kingtor

The term "bourgeois" historically referred to the middle class, particularly in capitalist societies. Its modern usage refers to the owning or capitalist class, distinct from the working class. It's less about position in a hierarchy and more about ownership of capital and means of production.

@Radical_EgoCom interesting. I guess I'm even more old school than I thought. Are the "investor class" (as the WSJ calls oligarchs) included in the modern definition of "bourgeois?"
@kingtor
The "investor class" or oligarchs are indeed part of the modern bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie refers to the capitalist class that owns the means of production and exploits the labor of the working class to generate profit. This class includes not only industrialists and business owners but also investors who derive their wealth from ownership of capital, stocks, and other financial assets.
@Radical_EgoCom thanks. I appreciate that explainer for the old grumpy guy in the corner. :D
