A new gold standard review of 100 studies finds:

- masks are effective in reducing transmission of respiratory diseases

- N95 respirators are significantly more effective than medical or cloth masks

- mask mandates are effective in reducing community transmission

https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/cmr.00124-23

The new review showing the effectiveness of masks addresses the flawed Cochrane study, which was deliberately misinterpreted by anti-maskers & some media to spread misinformation around masks.

This new review will serve as a gold standard reference to debunk mask misinformation.

"When we looked at RCTs, we found that masks do protect in the community, and N95 respirators are superior. Non-RCT evidence also shows that masks work and respirators work better."

A previous review suggested that masks donโ€™t work. We can assure you โ€“ they do.

Updated mask effectiveness study

@luckytran I also find it appropriate that the consider the socio cultural aspects. Thank you for sharing this paper!

Not applicable in areas governed by Conservatives and/or Republicans.

@luckytran On 2 recent medical visits โ€” annual checkup & ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ exam โ€” I wore my N95 from my ๐Ÿš˜ till I returned to my ๐Ÿš˜ (as I do in all public places).

Hereโ€™s who else wore a ๐Ÿ˜ท:
1. My nurse & my physician (a medical ๐Ÿ˜ท & N95, respectively)
2. The woman administering the 1st part of my ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ exam (medical ๐Ÿ˜ท)

Hereโ€™s who didnโ€™t:
Clerks, lab tech, optometrist, optician, & everyone in the waiting rooms (including several elderly patients).
And this was in 2 well-educated, โ€œblueโ€ communities.

@luckytran In it's dusk, humankind demanded a hundred studies to prove the obvious and still would not content itself with the result.
@luckytran question: I usually wear a mask anyway at large events to not get "con crud", but how effective are masks at keeping me safe if everyone else isn't masked? Especially curious in the face of mask mandate at pycon last week. By contrast, gophercon didn't have a mandate, but I just wore one for myself. Is one or the other safer for me? (Edit was to fix autocorrect typo)
@djotaku @luckytran How effective? Depends on many variables like fit of the mask, your activity, how often you take it off 'just for xyz', relative exposure levels, etc. The specific effectiveness cant be known for every case, but what can be known is that it is more effective than doing nothing.
@mystixa @luckytran that's sounds like how I've been acting, so nothing to change based on that analysis.

@djotaku @luckytran I also attended #PyConUS. I've not seen official reports from the conf. organizers, but another attendee wrote that there were some cases of COVID-19 among attendees. The mask requirement at PyCon US reduced the transmission of that virus and others.

Last year, I asked a doctor about mask usage. I was told that if less than approx. 75% of people at an event are wearing masks, the results are similar to that of nobody wearing a mask.
