Norway, Ireland and Spain recognize a Palestinian state in a historic move - Lemmy.World

Norway, Ireland and Spain recognized a Palestinian state on Wednesday in a historic move that drew condemnation from Israel and jubilation from the Palestinians. Israel ordered back its ambassadors from Norway and Ireland. It was a lightning cascade of announcements. First was Norway, whose Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said “there cannot be peace in the Middle East if there is no recognition.” Gahr Støre said the Scandinavian country will officially recognize a Palestinian state as of May 28. “By recognizing a Palestinian state, Norway supports the Arab peace plan,” he said.

Did not expect Spain on this list, good for them!
They were actually the first non-Ireland state to talk about recognizing Palestine. I was more surprised about Norway; was there anything about that before today?

Norway has a relatively outspoken that it's pretty much just a question of strategy in order to maximise impact.

Prime Minister Gahr Støre, April 12 2024:

We think along the same lines [as Spain]. We are ready to recognize the state of Palestine and their rightful place in the UN. The question is when, and on that we are closely coordinated [with Spain]. [...] I do not exclude the possibility [that Norway will recognize Palestine by the end of June], but we have not yet decided, and it is a very dynamic situation in the region.

Spain and Norway play different roles in negotiations: While Spain rally support and are louder, Norwegian peace processes have a history of happening entirely behind closed doors until they are ready to see the light of day (if that ever happens). That probably explains why the Norwegian position has not been more clearly marked, as any such step could weaken their position in negotiations.

(NTB)
