Good that @Morning_Joe opened the show with the appalling story of The Worst Justice (tough competition) displaying the insurrectionist (anarchist) symbol at his house (and blaming it on his wife, blaming it in turn on a neighbor's yard sign). This Court is ruined.

@jeffjarvis Most of the flags flown upside down in the UK are believed to be flown by gammons who are so "patriotic" that they don't even know which way up the flag should go.

@TimWardCam @jeffjarvis
Yes, but the UK flag is subtle when it comes to which side is up. Many naive people might not even notice that there is a difference.

The blue rectangle with the stars only appears once on the US flag. In one corner.

That makes it rather trivial to see that it's not symmetric, and which side up.

@yacc143 @jeffjarvis An upside down flag is a distress signal. One might expect any passing cop to knock at the door to find out what the problem is.
@TimWardCam @jeffjarvis
Not having your candidate win the election is emotional distress, isn't it?

@jeffjarvis

they don't have any respect for the people.

@jeffjarvis

This Court has been ruined since Scalia.

He was the one that provided intellectual cover (which outlets like the NYT totally bought) for the partisan method of starting with the result they wanted and then working backwards from there making a patchwork of obscure writings ("Brilliant," said the Times) to cover the predetermined result.

GOP "Justice."

@jeffjarvis
The #FoundingFathers believed giving SC Justices lifetime tenure would mitigate partisanship (loyalty to a particular president/party) b/c once they had the job, they couldn't lose it, and therefore had no reason to show favoritism.

Instead, it has worked out the opposite. There are no consequences against (ab)using their power for personal enrichment & push a political agenda. 🤬 https://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/watch/-i-am-beyond-disturbed-senator-reacts-to-report-of-stop-the-steal-symbol-at-justice-alito-s-house-211121221927

'I am beyond disturbed': Senator reacts to report of 'Stop the Steal' symbol at Justice Alito's house

An upside-down flag, adopted by Trump supporters contesting the Biden victory, flew over Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's front lawn as the Supreme Court was considering an election case, according to recent NYT reporting. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., joins Morning Joe to discuss.

@jeffjarvis This can't be real. Except in the era of Trump.

@jeffjarvis please stop calling the fascists "anarchist"

They are not anarchist. They are trying to seize and preserve state power which is about as un-anarchist as it gets.

@jeffjarvis Hi, that shithead Scalia has nothing to do with anarchists. We (anarchists) stand against literally everything he represents.
@jepyang
Spoken like a true anarchist. 🧐
@jeffjarvis Uh…yes? Not sure what you’re getting at?
@jepyang nevermind

@jeffjarvis Ok but seriously, do you understand you’re using “anarchism” and “anarchist” in senses that are directly opposed to their actual meaning?

Do you know what anarchists believe? What our political views are? How much we fucking hate Antonin Scalia?

@jepyang
I was being ironic, though that seems not to work well with the topic or the medium. My point is that the current Supreme Court and the fascist right wing in America seek to tear down the institutions they supposedly once lived to preserve. They are insurrectionists and as such use their authority to tear down the authority that holds them up. I did not intend to piss off anarchists hereabout and throw myself at their mercy.

@jeffjarvis I suppose I can’t deny the irony, but I don’t think it’s conveying the point you wanted to convey, even taken in an ironic sense.

To be very clear: Scalia and the rest of the right wing want people like me literally dead. It’s, uh, not a great feeling when a large account like yours decides to associate me with the fascists that want to kill me just for rhetorical effect.

@jeffjarvis That's a fascist not an anarchist symbol, why are you framing it this way? Are you confused about the difference between anarchy and fascism? Are you trying to confuse the two? Do you understand that anarchists are antifascists and you're doing the work of fascists when you confuse anarchy and fascism like you are doing here?

Also, if you're using "anarchy" where you really mean "chaos" then you're also missing how to best frame your own argument. These people don't want no rules, they just want different rules for themselves than the rest of us...that's fascism not anarchy and fascists will use chaos so they can then promise people too invested in "order" to carry out their plans to exterminate actual anarchists, as well as anyone else who refuses to bow down to their authority. When you value order over actual democracy, you're paving the way for and facilitating fascists.

@fifilamoura @jeffjarvis

You'd think a journalism professor would be aware of all those things 🤔

@RD4Anarchy @fifilamoura
You'd think anarchists would grok irony.

@jeffjarvis @fifilamoura

I don't see how you thought it would come across that way. If that was your intent you really failed... but now it's starting to smell like you're trolling.

@RD4Anarchy @fifilamoura
You didn't like what I said. I explained myself. You didn't like my explanation. We've each had our say. I'm sorry I offended. Can we move on now?

@jeffjarvis @RD4Anarchy @fifilamoura
Jeff, the phrase you’re looking for is, “Sorry, I was careless with terminology! I’ll edit the post.” Easily done. No harm, no foul.

(Not an anarchist myself, but did learn the difference between the vernacular “anarchist = chaos-lover” and the political science meaning of “anarchist” by making exactly the sort of mistake you made. No shame in learning something new!)

@jeffjarvis

>>...displaying the insurrectionist (anarchist) symbol at his house...<<

Where did you get the idea that was an anarchist thing? Do you have any citation to support this?

An anarchist symbol from a supreme court justice? Please make sense of that for me 🤷‍♂️

@jeffjarvis
Smearing anarchists in a post about a fascist SCOTUS isn't "irony", it's another in the endless stream of examples of a perverse liberal impulse: When faced with the gravest of threats to everything they hold dear from the fascist right, punch left
