Growing up in the US, it's unsurprising that I wasn't intimately familiar with the #ZXSpectrum until sometime in the last 10 years or so. (But my first computer was a ZX81!)

But I've come to appreciate the machine and the history of it's lineage over the years. The Speccy's graphics have a very distinct style, of course. And going over the games from it's earliest entries, down through to the early 90s, you can see a great deal of effort goes into stretching those very limited boundaries as time goes on. But it feels like it hits a plateau in the late 80s, as even it's best efforts struggle to break through the limited colors and the heavy attribute clashing.

Then I saw this, earlier today; a port of the NES #TMNT game. Holy crap, surely this has to be the most visually impressive Spectrum title from the original run of games, no? Or right up there.

It's not all perfect, but the clip I saw of it in a compilation video certainly caught my attention.

You may also enjoy Rainbow Island. It matches your description of games that were released in the twilight of the ZX Spectrum as a mainstream platform.

Rainbow Islands Walkthrough, ZX Spectrum

@haitchfive NICE! While it's not QUITE as visually impressive -- it doesn't handle attribute clashing quite as well, for instance, and it leans more into monochromatic sprites as opposed to TMNT's uncommon multicolor ones -- Rainbow Islands certainly seems like it would be much more enjoyable to play, of the two. :)

(That said, holy crap, that friggin' title screen is sure putting in the effort!)

@fortyseven It's very good, but a bit too garish for me. I'd probably vote for Light Force or the two Dan Dare games as my colour-laden favourites.
@fortyseven I always remember this feeling like a small open world game with the town maps.i felt like I could go anywhere (as long as it was in the sewers)! 😂
