TIL that many of #Brisbane's bus stop shelters are privately owned (not just the advertising slot).

With more e-scooters on footpaths and busier roads making it unsafe to ride on, improving footpaths makes a lot of sense. One way that can be done is to make bus shelters transparent so that bus users and footpath users can see each other.

At the moment I'm trying to get access to a report from BCC about the safety of a shelter that they recently reviewed.

Got a response back from BCC. They basically said that e-scooters are limited to 12km/h and cyclists are usually going slower, so it's all good.

I guess it's OK if you don't take cycling seriously.

That particular stretch of Logan Road (second picture) is dangerous to ride on as cars in the left lane are looking over their shoulder to merge as the lane ends. There is no bike lane there and the only alternative is to take the footpath.

On Kurilpa Bridge, "the current 10km/h limit was almost universally disregarded, with 96 per cent of bicycle and scooter riders at the south end travelling above 10km/h, with the median speed 19.6km/h".

"A Queensland Transport and Main Roads’ guideline for speed on shared paths says: “a bicycle can become unstable at speeds below 11km/h”."

‘Nice to see some logic’: Speed limit rises on Brisbane bridge where joggers beat bikes

Police had fined cyclists $464 for speeding on this inner-city green bridge on World Car-Free Day.

At some point council needs to accept the reality that they need to build more bike lanes. Failing that the footpaths become overcrowded and uncomfortable for everyone involved, and particularly unsafe when users ride faster than they should.

Oh, and get rid of those tacky bus stop ads to help with visibility in the meantime.
