I hereby declare #! a Religion under Title VII of the US Civil Rights Act.

Our beliefs:
- All Free and Open Source tools and decentralized networks are our diety
- We worship by creating, using, and teaching FOSS tools
- We abstain from proprietary tools to the fullest extent we are able
- We recognize demands that we use proprietary software to lead well educated, socialized, healthy, and productive lives as religious discrimination

Like all religions, you are free to declare yourself part of the religion by observing as much or as little of the tenants of the faith as you like, and interpreting them as you wish.

Also as a decentralized religion, anyone may declare themselves as a member with any title they like.

huh @lrvick, since both links lead to a site either behind clownflare or load from gaggle cdn, i start to think that your religion is one of those honeypots created by em glowies

@cnx hashbang is self hosted and certainly not behind cloudflare. I think we may have used a font from a CDN though 15 years ago when we made the site. Should update that at some point.

Also matrix.to is just a discovery service. You can simply join #!:matrix.org with your client of choice

That’d be nice, @lrvick, IMHO https://hashbang.sh can just be HTML with inlined CSS, loading (external) resources just make it extra spooky for no good reason.

I am aware, but both https://matrix.to and https://matrix.org (and https://matrix-federation.matrix.org) are behind clownflare. I refuse to believe that’s fullest extent you are able.

@cnx I don't own those servers, so yes in fact, that is the fullest extent I am able at the moment.

We are in the progress of self-hosting matrix for the #! community though.

Help is welcome.

@cnx Someone on our team actually just made a PR to address this: https://github.com/hashbang/hashbang.sh/pull/188
Replace Montserrat font family by panekj · Pull Request #188 · hashbang/hashbang.sh

Thus we avoid leaking IP addresses to fonts.googleapis.com.

/s then @lrvick, enlighten me, how is that any difference from directing people to discard being okay because you don’t own that mass surveillance system. i wonder what’s next, pointing to micro shaft’s code forge?

Jokes aside, I’m glad to hear this happening. I have been hosting one for a couple of years now so if there’s any need with debugging or federation testing, please let me know. Anything more than that would be overstepping my boundary IMHO since I’m not really a sheep in thy herd, even though I do lurk in the room every now and then.

@cnx We have actually been in progress of moving off github and self hosting forgejo. We already did for Disrust: https://git.distrust.co

Hoping to clone the same setup to #! soon. We even have a bounty for it if any volunteer has time or interest.

20 years ago Github was a very different place.

As far as sheep and herds, anyone is welcome to help with anything. We are a do-ocracy. If you want something done, you are empowered to do it.

Forgejo: Beyond coding. We Forge.
