May 9 is John Brown's birthday

A staunch abolitionist, he led armed raids to liberate slaves and was the first American executed for treason

His resolve galvanized anti-slavery sentiment in the North

ยซ As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, his soul is marching on ยป

@LilahTovMoon it figures the first man to be executed for Treason in America would be an abolitionist......

@LilahTovMoon what i find interesting about John Brown is the FEROCITY unleashed on him for being a race traitor.

Americans who embrace white supremacy are conditioned to believe other 'white' people won't harm them. that became clear with Trump in 2016. BIPOC activists like me sounded the alarm. meanwhile the Pelosis of the world were like, he wouldn't! he's one of us!

then the pandemic happened.

that's what's been unfolding since 2020: the young people get it, the older don't.

@LilahTovMoon He was also, arguably, nearly directly responsible for the Civil War, as he acted out exactly the script those who feared the North's interference in slavery had imagined of their opponents: using violence to threaten their lives and take their property. By embodying the bogeyman, he convinced a lot of folks in the South that there was no more appeasement to be had with their political opponents and the only way to secure their future and the future of their children was to take up arms.

... you know, if we needed any more reasons to like the guy. ๐Ÿ˜‰

one of my favorite books of all time is James McBride's The Good Lord Bird, which was beautifully adapted for Netflix with the author's help

Ethan Hawke's performance as John Brown is a tour de force ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The final scene echoes in my mind, & still gives me chills when I remember it

@LilahTovMoon That's fascinating. I've been familiar with the song "John Brown's Body" for as long as I can remember but I never knew what it was about.

He is another one that I was taught the lost cause myth about, along with Grant. And I cannot express how absolutely, royally PISSED itmakes me that they taught me that load of absolute CRAP about the few 19th century white Americans who were on the correct side of the racial questions.
@LilahTovMoon Political violence - America's first mass sport.
