All day long on here, people complain about the change, the enshittification, people stop caring, all this change . . . but I don't hear a theory about why all the change, we complain about the negative change, but only talk about sorts of people, "liberals," and "fascists," and whatnot - names and sorts of people that existed already, the mere existence of a thing doesn't explain change.

There are reasons.
Why does anyone stop caring, ever? Abuse works. People stop caring when their environment makes caring a liability, when they are hardened by abuse. Who does not know this?

Is it suddenly not true because No, we're not talking about psychology, we're talking about politics right now?

Also, the not caring is cumulative in this environment. Our kids will care less than we did, because the environment is violent, has been for generations, and so they are evolving towards it, as we did, because evolution is how life works, it is not some origin story that happened once and then we all lived happily ever after. FFS.

I feel a component of this is having a powerful figure "liberating" people to act their worst. To let out their most dark and putrid behavior. As Hitler did. "Be your worst. I allow you. It is ok and for the best."
