Justice Merchan missed a huge opportunity when he said "The last thing I want to do is put you in jail. You were President of the United States and you may be the next President."
What if, instead of centering this comment on himself, he centered it on justice. He could have used some of Trump's political statements, for example:
"You are running for president and you have the respect of millions of people. You are running on the premise that we must be tough on crime, and that the justice system must treat everyone fairly. Well, it wouldn't be fair or just of me to allow you to skirt the rules of this court. I will use my power to lock you up if you put yourself in contempt of this court again. I am sure you would agree that the law must not treat you any differently than Antibes else."
Then smack that gavel. (Because I would not be shy with that gavel).
