Around this time of year, in historic northern-hemisphere European cultures, #Summer begins. This is part of why so many #holidays are recognized on/near 1 May in the Gregorian calendar.

The reason is the difference between a solely astronomical solar calendar, and an agricultural calendar. If you are a subsistence farmer, planting your food crops (largely different from the foods grown in those regions today) needed to be done by now.

Time to celebrate the end of that effort!

Because it was an important moment of the year, and so many traditions developed around that agricultural 'pause' between efforts, many cultural events also occur(red).
