Around this time of year, in historic northern-hemisphere European cultures, #Summer begins. This is part of why so many #holidays are recognized on/near 1 May in the Gregorian calendar.

The reason is the difference between a solely astronomical solar calendar, and an agricultural calendar. If you are a subsistence farmer, planting your food crops (largely different from the foods grown in those regions today) needed to be done by now.

Time to celebrate the end of that effort!

#1May #May1

Because it was an important moment of the year, and so many traditions developed around that agricultural 'pause' between efforts, many cultural events also occur(red).

#MayDay / #MayEve pays homage to a range of traditional, religious, and civil holidays like #Maious, #Floralia, #CalanMai, #Beltane, #PrvomajskiUranak, and #Kevadpüha.

#InternationalWorkersDay / #LaborDay has no direct connection, commemorating the start of a #LaborStrike for an 8 hour work day.
