Trumpeter(s)! | New Music Dublin 2024

Follow the trail of trumpeters - 36 in all - as they each play Gerald Barry’s 1 minute fanfare Trumpeter one-by-one on a route across the city from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Westland Row to the Courtyard of Dublin Castle, heralding our massed performance Trumpets! at 12 noon.

New Music Dublin

Trumpets! This was another New Music Dublin performance in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. At first the trumpeters (and other brass players) were clustered together, but then they started to move around. And for a piece written by Peter Jakober they stationed themselves around the courtyard and let the audience move around and through them.

Following on from 2022’s massed brass project, the trumpeters of the Monochrome Project led by Marco Blaauw, Royal Irish Academy, Paris Conservatoire, Royal Academy of Music, and brass players from across Dublin will join together outdoors in a world premiere of a new work by renowned American composer David Lang

Final New Music Dublin pictures, taken at the final concert, at which I dared the wrath of the National Concert Hall parkies by taking quick pictures of turntablist Mariam Rezaei. I might have taken a better picture if someone hadn't come and sat in front of me.

Pictures from the 2024 New Music Dublin festival. This mainly takes place in the National Concert Hall, but the photos are mainly of open air events as the NCH people are not entirely down with people taking photographs.

@IanMoore3000 I almost went to this - loved the massed brass a few years ago - but decided to do the Totally Made Up Orchestra in NCH and rehearsals were at the same time - did you get to any other part of NMD?
@ElizabethHilliardSoprano I went to quite some other things on Saturday and Sunday: Natalia Beylis' Around Here The Birds Plant The Trees, the Jóhann Jóhannsson / A Winged Victory For The Sullen double bill, Beginner's Guide to Slow Travel, and the Il Ritorno di Angelo / Mariam Rezaei double bill. I think the Totally Made Up Orchestra is the thing I am most sorry I missed, though I hope they stuck with the promise/threat of the programme and had at least some non-musicians in the line-up.
@ElizabethHilliardSoprano did you make it to much yourself? I often wonder whether performers go to stuff themselves in festivals like that, or are they too busy preparing for their performance and then decompressing from it afterwards.
@IanMoore3000 Oh we went to a few of the same so - I also went to Natalia Beylis and Mariam Rezaei - I found myself bizarrely claustrophibic during the kirkos piece so didn't make it the whole way through that.
@IanMoore3000 I was doing the totally made up orchestra in the same way as everyone else - had originally thought I'd go to Dublin Castle and then go to watch the totally made up orchestra but Ken Whelan persuaded me to join in for rehearsals of the TMUO also. It was fantastic. I do community music, running a few choirs so was nice to be on the receiving end of a workshop rather than guiding it. I really enjoyed Mariam Rezaei's set - it was the one thing I was sure would sell out
@IanMoore3000 - I think I made it to about eight shows over the weekend, but yes I wasn't performing as such, so easier to pace self.
@ElizabethHilliardSoprano it feels like it was a good year for New Music Dublin... A couple of years ago I became a bit disenchanted with it and started thinking it had got stuck in a rut, with much of what was on offer feeling like it was confirming to genre expectations of "new music", but the programme seemed more varied and adventurous this year.
@ElizabethHilliardSoprano I got more into the Kirkos piece as it went along. I didn't begrudge anyone leaving as it was more performance art than music, but I liked it once I adjusted into not approaching it as music.
