Renewed #Amhara-#Tigray conflict leaves up to 50,000 displaced

It is unclear who started the current conflict around Alamata, in South Tigray, and details are challenging to verify.

#Ethiopia

Several areas of the #Tigray region of #Ethiopia, claimed as historic #Amhara areas, have been annexed by the Amhara region during the war between the federal government, Amhara forces and #Eritrea on one side, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) and the #Oromo Liberation Army (#OLA) on the other.

War crimes, crimes against humanity and the #genocide of Tigrayans had followed in West and South #Tigray.

All parties — except #Eritrea — theoretically abide by the Pretoria agreement that ended the hostilities. The status of the contested areas was subject to the same. No progress has been made however.

#Ethiopia

Following the 2020–2022 war, an #Amhara-#Oromo conflict as well as conflicts between the federal government and Amhara (#Fano) and Oromo (#OLA) militias have gained in intensity.

The situation is and remains concerning, regardless of any further developments risking to rekindle the #Tigray war.

Besides these military confrontations, a devastating famine already affects the region as a result of drought and war, a fact deliberately ignored and denied by federal authorities.
