doylio@arstechnica It's great to see so much progress in renewables, but I think ditching nuclear was a mistake. Until we have reliable grid-scale storage, renewables will always need to be backed by something else, and at the moment the only non-carbon emitting option is nuclear (unless you have the right geography for hydro or geothermal)
Kibun@doylio @arstechnica backing renewables with nuclear is not a very good strategy, nuclear power plants can reduce their output but cant shut off completely, which they should at peak renewable generation times. So you will always pay for expensive nuclear power while wasting renewables.
Policy makers and thinktanks see a lot of potential in power2gas (especiallly hydrogen), it has bad efficieny (~30%) but its more flexible and potentially cheaper than nuclear power.
