(1) Starting in 1964 Halle-Neustadt was created as a planned city in the german democratic republic. The intention was to provide housing for the workers of the nearby chemical plants.
At its peak in the 1980s Halle-Neustadt housed more than 90,000 people. However, after the german reunification half of the population left the city, reaching a low point of 45,025 inhabitants in 2015. In consequence many apartments and buildings were left empty.
