Ilhan Omar's daughter suspended from university over pro-Palestine activism - Lemmy.World

Three Barnard College students, including US lawmaker Ilhan Omar’s daughter Isra Hirsi, have been suspended for participation in an ongoing Gaza solidarity protest encampment at Columbia University in New York City. The suspension of the three students came as university administrators called on the New York Police Department (NYPD) to dismantle the tents that had been set up earlier on Wednesday. Several students told MEE that heavily armed police dressed in riot gear entered the university lawns on Thursday to tear down the 50-plus tents. By late Thursday afternoon, the camps were gone and dozens of students had been arrested. The developments on Thursday followed the revelations that three students - Isra Hirsi, 21, along with Maryam Iqbal, 18, and Soph Dinu, 21 - had received letters earlier in the day informing them they had been suspended, effective immediately, due to refusing to pay heed to calls to end their protest.

I was curious about the statements of the Colombia professors that brought them congressional ire. Found this article about it. I think some of it is pretty gross glorification of Hamas but some of these professors are definitely being slandered just for being critical of Israel.
Here Are the Columbia Professors Ripped for Anti-Israel Remarks, Pro-Palestinian Indoctrination [incl. Joseph Massad, Mohamed Abdou, Hamid Dabashi]

As Columbia University's president insisted Wednesday that the Ivy League school was doing all it could to crackdown on rising antisemitism, the campus remains filled with a slew of professors who have a history of spewing controversial remarks. Ranging

Campus Watch

Massad, who once called Israel “a racist state”, has also previously come under fire for allegedly spewing anti-Israeli remarks in class and for comparing Hamas aggression against Israel to the Warsaw ghetto uprising against the Nazis during WWII.

Yep checks out. Hamas forgot to be the perfect victim. Don’t google the civilian casualties of other violent uprisings.

The tenured academic has faced widespread calls to be fired ever since he referred to the Oct. 7 attack inflicted by Hamas terrorists as “awesome” and a “stunning victory of the Palestinian resistance.”

“The sight of the Palestinian resistance fighters storming Israeli checkpoints separating Gaza from Israel was astounding,” Massad penned in a 1,800 word essay published 24 hours after the bloodshed.

“Perhaps the major achievement of the resistance in the temporary takeover of these settler-colonies is the death blow to any confidence that Israeli colonists had in their military and its ability to protect them.”

Mohamed Abdou

Just days after the Oct. 7 attack, Abdou controversially declared on social media, “Yes, I’m with Hamas and Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad.”

Hamid Dabashi:

He’s come under fire in recent years for a slew of controversial social media posts, including a since-deleted one in which he blamed Israel for every “dirty” problem in the world.

“Every dirty treacherous ugly and pernicious happening in the world just wait for a few days and the ugly name ‘Israel’ will pop up in the atrocities,” Dabashi wrote in the 2018 Facebook post, cited by the Jewish Journal.

Anti-Palestinian sentiment in institutions is strong and must be fought, but most of the situations cited here are not about Hamas not being the ‘perfect victim’.

So who is going to stand up for the Palestinians? Is it Genocide Joe that just blocked recognition for a Palestinian state after half a year of Genocide and the entire world turning against israel? Are you going to save the Palestinians?

Put people in a concentration camp for 20+ years, completely ignore their suffering and peaceful protests, and when they finally fight back go “Oooh that’s bad! They didn’t do it perfectly!”.

If you want to deny Hamas that’s fine. Then tell me, who else is fighting for Palestinians. How is it going in the West Bank without Hamas?

“Who will stand up for the Palestinians, if we don’t simp for Islamofascists?”

It’s funny how your kind always lands on “NOT GOOD ENOUGH” whenever liberals are involved, but “Critical support for holsum pro-genocide chungus 😊” whenever authoritarians are involved.

Couldn’t you turn that around on yourself? I mean, I’ve heard plenty of people claim that we shouldn’t let a little thing like support for genocide deter us from voting for biden.
I didn’t realize Hamas was running in a FPTP election in which the other viable party was also a supporter of genocide. Here I thought they hadn’t had elections in almost two decades in Gaza while Hamas has squeezed every last ounce of political independence from the local institutions. Silly me.
I didn’t realize biden has to support genocide. Mighty convenient for that lover of genocide to have the other guy be worse, must be one reason why the democrats helped trump be the republican nominee in the first place. Here you are helping them out with their brilliant strategy while thinking democrats will ever improve things. Why would they bother when they have an infinite supply of worse candidates to run against?

I didn’t realize biden has to support genocide.

Do I have to break out the polls again? Or do you just not understand what ‘democracy’ means? “Democracy” doesn’t mean “What I agree with, and the more I agree with it, the more democratic it is”.

Mighty convenient for that lover of genocide to have the other guy be worse, must be one reason why the democrats helped trump be the republican nominee in the first place.

… how many Republican candidates, do you think, would be better or even equal to Biden on the issue?

Please. Regale me.

Here you are helping them out with their brilliant strategy while thinking democrats will ever improve things. Why would they bother when they have an infinite supply of worse candidates to run against?

“Wow, I can’t believe that the candidate who won the Dem primary (or presumed she was going to win even before she did) wanted the weakest possible candidate as opposition! She should have fought for the STRONGEST candidate to oppose her to emerge from the GOP primary!”

It would be great if you could do something other than parrot the talking points of your fellow fascists.

Do I have to break out the polls again? Or do you just not understand what ‘democracy’ means? “Democracy” doesn’t mean “What I agree with, and the more I agree with it, the more democratic it is”.

These polls?: news.gallup.com/…/majority-disapprove-israeli-act…

… how many Republican candidates, do you think, would be better or even equal to Biden on the issue?

I see you missed the point in my post where having the republican party as an excuse means nothing will ever improve. Nice job defending this system even after having it spelled out for you. Genocide is unacceptable, full stop.

“Wow, I can’t believe that the candidate who won the Dem primary (or presumed she was going to win even before she did) wanted the weakest possible candidate as opposition! She should have fought for the STRONGEST candidate to oppose her to emerge from the GOP primary!”

If you’re funding fascists, you get fascists. It’s not a risk worth taking, but democrats are either brain-dead morons or they don’t mind fascism because it gives them an excuse to never improve anything. Either way, they keep doing it: nypost.com/…/democrats-spend-53m-to-boost-far-rig…

Trump wasn’t the weakest candidate at all in 2016. He promised changed in an election year where people were hungry for change. Meanwhile galaxy brain Hillary promised more of the same, insisting that the status quo was fine. Oh look, another mistake democrats keep committing, the geniuses that they are.

It would be great if you could do something other than parrot the talking points of your fellow fascists.

You’re calling me a fascist yet you defend genocide.

Disapproval of the Israeli response is not the same as support for removing support from Israel

I see you missed the point in my post where having the republican party as an excuse means nothing will ever improve.

Yes, that’s why nothing has ever improved. Thanks. Great talk. 10/10 for illiteracy in modern history.

Genocide is unacceptable, full stop.

Right, so mind reminding me why you’re so eager to have a genocide in the US?

If you’re funding fascists, you get fascists.

There wasn’t a non-fascist going to win the GOP’s primary, unless you’re eager to play apologist for even MORE Christofascists. Which, honestly, wouldn’t surprise me at this point.

Trump wasn’t the weakest candidate at all in 2016.

lmao

He lost the popular vote to Hillary fucking Clinton.

I don’t think you can get much weaker than that.

You’re calling me a fascist yet you defend genocide.

I’m defending genocide because… I don’t want a genocide in the USA.

That’s a curious definition of defending genocide, but I suppose fascists aren’t known for their attachment to the meaning of words.

Majority in U.S. Say Israel Has Valid Reasons for Fighting; Fewer Say the Same About Hamas

57% of Americans express some sympathy with both Israelis and Palestinians, including 26% who say their sympathies lie equally with both groups.

Pew Research Center

Yes, that’s why nothing has ever improved. Thanks. Great talk. 10/10 for illiteracy in modern history.

Actually yeah, which is why obama continued bush’s surveillance state, bailouts for the rich, and wars. It’s why biden continued trump’s trade war, border policies, and sucking israel’s dick.

Right, so mind reminding me why you’re so eager to have a genocide in the US?

I’m doing this by thinking biden should listen to his constituents and stop the genocide? Apparently you think biden is wise in ignoring voters so that he can continue supporting genocide. Here’s a win-win for you: biden stops supporting genocide abroad AND we don’t have a genocide in the US because he’d gain voter approval. Easiest victory of all time, but you’re so supportive of genocide and democrats are fond of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. By the way, I provided poll numbers to support my argument, what happened to the poll numbers you claimed you had?

There wasn’t a non-fascist going to win the GOP’s primary, unless you’re eager to play apologist for even MORE Christofascists. Which, honestly, wouldn’t surprise me at this point.

There isn’t a non-fascist republican because democrats intentionally let them be the worst they can be so they can look good by comparison to that extremely low bar. The overton window is being pulled to the right by republicans and pushed to the right by democrats. Again, democrats actively support the worst of the worst: nypost.com/…/democrats-spend-53m-to-boost-far-rig…

and you fall for it.

lmao. He lost the popular vote to Hillary fucking Clinton. I don’t think you can get much weaker than that.

Doesn’t matter when he became president. Democrats could’ve nominated Bernie Sanders, who polled better against trump: politifact.com/…/bernie-sanders-says-he-polls-bet…

But of course the democrats just had to have their queen as the nominee, so they snatched defeat from the jaws for victory yet again.

I’m defending genocide because… I don’t want a genocide in the USA. That’s a curious definition of defending genocide, but I suppose fascists aren’t known for their attachment to the meaning of words.

So you could stop genocide both here and abroad by pressuring biden to listen to his constituents but you think it’s best to ignore voters. Don’t be surprised if your brilliant strategy doesn’t work.

Democrats have spent more than $53 million to boost far-right Republican primary candidates in nine key states as part of a controversial election strategy.

Yes, that’s why nothing has ever improved. Actually yeah,

Imagine being this privileged, lmao.

There isn’t a non-fascist republican because democrats intentionally let them be the worst they can be so they can look good by comparison to that extremely low bar.

Ah, yes, it’s the fault of the Democrats that Republican voters love fascism. This is the exact kind of bootlicking bullshit that fascist apologists have pulled since the 1930s.

I’m doing this by thinking biden should listen to his constituents and stop the genocide?

Nice, glad you didn’t read the poll I linked to, great talk.

We’re done here.

Imagine being this privileged, lmao.

You say, as you dismiss the 30,000+ deaths and counting in Palestine.

Ah, yes, it’s the fault of the Democrats that Republican voters love fascism. This is the exact kind of bootlicking bullshit that fascist apologists have pulled since the 1930s.

The same 1930s where the capitalists were all on board with fascism because they’d rather that than the communism that was rising thanks to the many grievances of the people? You know, like how the democrats promote fascism over the socialist programs that Bernie promoted? Democrats fought harder against Bernie than Trump. You couldn’t have picked a worse example to make your point. Congratulations, you played yourself.

Nice, glad you didn’t read the poll I linked to which quite clearly laid out that a majority of American voters do not support a harder line on Israel (as absurd as that is), great talk.

Your poll talks about hamas vs israel. That’s like asking if you approve of osama bin laden or the Iraq war. Further down on your link, it asks if people think biden is striking the right balance on israel and the highest option is “not sure” at 40% with the second option being “favoring the israelis too much” at 22%. Another case of you playing yourself. Also, your poll was from back in february and more and more people are seeing israel for the genocidal apartheid regime that it is. My poll is more clear in its question of asking about israel’s actions in Gaza and the majority clearly do not approve. My poll is from march.

We’re done here.

You’re done playing yourself? Congratulations! I just hope you can find it in your heart to stop simping for genocide and stop defending a strategy where the democratic party actively promotes fascists to make themselves look better.

You say, as you dismiss the 30,000+ deaths and counting in Palestine.

There were even more civilian deaths in the Russian wars against Chechnya, yet communists were all on board.

That’s terrible, but I don’t know what that has to do with this discussion.

They say, implying the US president couldn’t have died it with one phone call, or simply stopped giving the weapons to the people doing the killing.

It’s amazing the leaps of logic these assholes will go to trying to rationalize still being the good guys while directly causing a genocide.

Self-righteousness is a hell of a drug.

“Liberals involved” = liberals supporting Genocide instead of fighting against it.

And then flipping reality and saying the resistance is actually the Genocidal ones.

I look for Hamas what I look for in Israel, an adherence to humanitarian law. Hamas is perfectly happy to kill Palestinians, especially when they happen to be their political rivals. They remind me of the IRA, using a justified grievance for political gain.
Gaza: Palestinians tortured, summarily killed by Hamas forces during 2014 conflict

Hamas forces carried out a brutal campaign of abductions, torture and unlawful killings against Palestinians accused of “collaborating” with Israel and others during Israel’s military offensive against Gaza in July and August 2014, according to a new report by Amnesty International. ‘Strangling Necks’: Abduction, torture and summary killings of Palestinians by Hamas forces during the […]

Amnesty International
Oppression is not an excuse to commit heinous crimes. A party can be brutally, illegally oppressed and still be held responsible for the things they do in retaliation.
Shut the fuck up
Nah I don’t think I will you man child.
That’s really cool maybe have the same feelings for those being oppressed for 75+ years instead of them striking back when everyone else has abandoned them.

Hey guess what, most people can hold more than one idea in their heads at thw same time.

Israel occupying palestine and committing genocide is bad! Israel killing civilians is bad!

Hamas killing civilians is bad! Hamas kidnapping people is bad!

These are not mutually exclusive, hamas don’t get a free pass to be cunts because Israel is a bigger cunt.

Absolutely they sure have massive flaws. But since there is nobody else standing up for the Palestinians right to self determination Hamas is the best out of all the options. Including the US as Biden just proved.

Hm. Where the fuck have the billions in aid money to Gaza gone over the years?

Hamas has done some amazing “standing up for the Palestinians”…

Why doesn’t Hamas just make a liberal paradise inside of their concentration camp? Great question.

If your neighbor constantly shot at you, you’d build a wall between your houses too.

But Gaza has another boarder. Does Egypt participate in making Gaza a concentration camp?

If someone invades your land and kills your family you shoot them indeed. Which is what Palestinians do.

Israel controls the Egypt border so yes. Weird you bring that up.

The Egyptian-controlled Rafah crossing is Gaza’s main lifeline to the outside world that is not run by Israel.

reuters.com/…/why-gazas-rafah-border-crossing-mat…

For someone who seems to like to portray a good understanding of the situation this seems like a huge oversight. Or were you bullshitting me?

Why is the Rafah border crossing important and when will it open?

The Rafah crossing is the main entrance and exit point to the Gaza Strip from Egypt. It has become a focal point of efforts to deliver aid to Palestinians since Israel imposed a total siege on the enclave following a deadly incursion by Hamas militants on Oct. 7.

Reuters
So who does the checking at Rafah is that Egypt? Why is there IDF at the scanners?
Because they stand to lose the most when Hamas brings in weapons. Stop acting confused.

So why is Biden asking israel to lift the blockade? Not Egypt? Kinda weird huh.

Every human rights organisation and NGO and Country in the world claims israel is blocking all aid and here you are here saying the opposite.

You mean since Oct 7th? You know the answer.

I wouldn’t trust that website.

I have received Facebook memes from demented old people that were more convincing.

It seems like this site just specialises in outrage and slander.

I was mainly looking for quotes which this article got for me, but I agree scrutiny isn’t a bad lens to read this through.
They should name it back to “king’s college”
The headline is technically accurate but I think it’s misleading. I’m pretty sure a college student would be in serious trouble for disobeying university rules to the point that the police was involved regardless of what she was protesting for or against.
Oh look, consequences for actions. I can’t blame the school for suspending them. I can’t blame the kids for protesting. Sometimes when you protest, you know you’re going to be arrested.
Which should have no relevance to your status as a student. Unless you’ve been convicted of something which would affect your studies/fellow students, this should not be a thing.
They are, among other things, trespassing on university property. Even if you don’t think their “activism” is objectionable, their actions still affect the university.
Trespassing? They pay to fucking be there.
I paid for the unlimited soup and salad at the Olive Garden, I should be able to piss in their fountain!
If they were pissing on the lawn sure, tough on them. But they weren’t. They were sitting on the lawn. That they paid to sit on? This is a strawman argument
That doesn’t mean they own the place. The university still makes the rules.
I said the same thing when the cops destroyed the tent I pitched at the movie theater.

Meanwhile, an ISU student posted a whole racist rant talking about how black people can’t be country because they were slaves and “pickin not planting” and the school was like 🤷🏻‍♀️
