Well, shit.
Turns out, I need to double check that the bag is fully zipped before slinging it over my shoulder. The 300mm that was attached to the camera seems fine, though has a new rattle now. Time to start thinking about how I’m gonna replace this.
The D810 did really well for me, and is still a pretty good value for higher megapixel cameras - 36mp for ~$900ish. However, those at big files and I have yet to really NEED that kind of resolution. I’ve been looking at other options - $900 also gets a decent D500, or a little more could get a D4.
However, $400 could get a decent D7100 … much more sensible cost wise, and should cover 90% of what I shoot. I’m also not getting paid for my photography, which makes looking at something like a D850 at nearly $2k absolutely not a possibility.
Time to make some choices - $250-500 for a D7000 or D7200 and saving up for a D850 down the line is currently in the lead.
A follow up for the question no one was wondering about - my wife got me a D7200 for Christmas, and it's been fantastic! Most of what I take photos of are pets, some landscapes, and birds. The crop sensor turns 300mm into 450, and the 24mp has plenty of cropability. The low light capability is solid, and while the dynamic range isn't quite as impressive as the D810, it's more than enough for me. Now I need to stop grumbling about gear, and get out to actually take pictures.
