A Spy Site Is Scraping Discord and Selling Users’ Messages

404 Media tested the service, called Spy Pet, and verified it is collecting information on Discord users, including the messages they post across usually disparate servers.

@404mediaco another great reason to use Revolt!
@404mediaco Discord's total monthly active users in January, 2023: 154 million (source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1367908/discord-mau-worldwide/ as of 17.04.2024 upon checking)

It's more beneficial for the users to leave the hellhole, just before things get even worse.

Say no to proprietary messengers & their botnets.
Discord global MAU 2023 | Statista

@404mediaco like, holy shit:

“Have you ever wondered where your friend hangs out on Discord? Tired of basic search tools like Discord.id? Look no further!” Spy Pet’s website reads. It claims to be tracking more than 14,000 servers, 600 million users, and includes a database of more than 3 billion messages.
Do we always have to delete personal data if a person asks?

Grounds on which an organisation can refuse, or not, to delete a citizen’s personal data under the EU’s data protection law.

European Commission

does @matrix has a way to prevent that? 🤔

@404mediaco

@lutindiscret @matrix nope, quite the opposite. public matrix rooms can be read easily by anyone with HTTP access. and private rooms can be read the exact same way as Spy Pet. The only exception is DMs with end-to-end encryption on.
@404mediaco And the story repeats itself. I remember a strangely similar website with a clown icon being quite popular a few years ago, offering some data for free and the rest at a subscription
It was ultimately taken down, but it took surprisingly long

@404mediaco Been seeing more an more people complain about discord lately. My brother was working on something last year for a school project that people might be interested in. I am just gonna leave here....

oh no leopards ate my face!!!

how could this happen???

🙄
@404mediaco Anyone with enough motivation can do the same thing with ANY chat platform, it doesnt really matter, as long as the channels are public to access, one bot can stay in there can save all the chat data etc. Unfortunately I don't think you can do much about this other than reporting bad bots and malicious actors violating privacy laws on purpose.
@404mediaco Oh yeaaaaah. That reminds me to move from Discord.
@404mediaco Nothing will change. Users will keep using.
I “hearted” this at first which felt weird so I am commenting instead. My daughter is 3 and I can’t believe that, to this day, the prevalent messaging for kids her age is that “Police are here to protect you and catch bad guys.” I get that lots of messages about society for toddlers lack nuance….but at a certain point that lack of context turns into a lie.
