A terrifying, timely, and so necessary reminder: on the other side of the wall from the terror, starvation, blood, and ashes were ‘ordinary’ people making bright modern lives for themselves, pursuing the future in calm, pragmatic, bureaucratic efficiency, certain they were doing the right thing.
