Tesla Software Update Traps TikToker Inside 115-Degree Car

Tesla warns owners that opening their doors or windows while installing a software update could damage the vehicle, so she stayed put.

@scalzi you can’t open the windows while doing an update 😳🤯
@the_other_jon you can't open the door because there's no manual lever, at least in some of them.
@eagerpebble it just seem odd that you shouldn’t or can’t open a window during an update.
@scalzi This has never happened to me because my 2009 Honda Fit doesn’t require software updates.
@scalzi "I was locked in my Tesla during an update, but I'd just scarfed 3 bean burritos from Chipotles."

@scalzi It is funny, I never really saw The Ultimate Computer as a particularly insightful Trek episode.

But Musk has made me rethink that assessment, he has basically accomplished precisely what Dr Daystrom did in that episode: create technology that is a harmful physical manifestation of his deeply flawed and insecure personality.

@scalzi The headline is a bit incendiary… There's a manual release so you can always open the door, so she wasn't actually trapped in the car. Granted, Tesla has probably overstated the damage that could occur if the manual release is used and should do better about warning people to not be in the car during an update.
@scalzi the sound of breaking glass would have solved her problem. Not trapped.
@scalzi If she was over 85 years old, she probably wasn't locked in so much as just trying to warm up.
@scalzi That's what that little orange hammer is for. Get one, they're cheap! In a pinch you can use a seatbelt buckle if you can get enough slack to swing it.

@scalzi It seems like a contradiction, but the option to upgrade software over the Internet has made things worse. You would think it would result in not having to live with bugs, so things would be better. Instead, no software ever truly needs to be finished, and no QA process needs to be perfect.

So, now, instead of your car dealer doing a yearly software upgrade when your car happens to be in the shop, you get monthly OTA upgrades that might break if you open the door.
