I also thought that in Chapter 3, the concept of hyper-criminalization was very interesting. The concept of creating conditions that make young people want to have more restrictive punishments puzzled me at first and is still a little confusing. @DSC28TC #so345 I don't know if it's necessarily that the boys want more punishment, but instead they crave the stability that formal punishment provides. Many of these boys live in constant fear that any of their actions may be criminalized or punished, but they never know when that may occur. They are constantly "tiptoeing" around their lives to avoid appearing like a criminal, but then they're criminalized for trying to look too innocent which means they must've done something bad/criminal.
