Andrew Bosworth (Boz)google invented it! That was like a decade ago though. It has some nice technical properties for internet photos (better quality and performance), but no idea why it is taking off now.

Wayne Robinson@crumbler they’re often more efficient to use on the web and you’re probably seeing more of them because many CDNs will automatically convert/serve them if the browser supports them.
