I'm going to be installing a psio on my ps1 which I'll be using to play ps1 games on stream with.

So why not use my ps2?

While it's true that the graphics chip for the ps1 is on phat models of ps2 consoles, the sound chip is not. The ps2 uses its own sound chip to emulate the ps1 sounds and not all of them sound exactly perfect, specifically for things like menu sounds in FF games.

Its minor and I really thin the collective concious of fans of these games have forgotten what it's actually meant to sound like and it's always been a bit of a small annoyance for me personally.

Yeah I know games like FF9 play slightly slower on the original hardware.

My plan is to use the ps1 multi av to scart for rgb output but I may simply use s-video or even component because of the ditheting and blending techniques used to produce the image the way it was intended for consumers.

The real challenge is going to be capturing this feed and presenting it as close to what I am seeing as possible for people watching the recording.

In order to do this hdr might be necessary, but I intend on recording several different version and even editing in a scan line filter for quality below 4k though doing this will basically require that I split the video signal twice from the console. One going through the #retrotink4k and another going directly to a separate capture card.

All that aside I should look into save state solutions for editing and quality of life purposes. I already have this on my ps2 for instance.

And lastly I'm considering streaming like it 2007 and just pointing a 4k camera at my crt monitor but with advances in capture technology that might be completely unreasonable unless I wanted to put themes around the TV Im playing on (think kerch from the game in question)

All of this will be done on owncast because I do not want to deal with copyright and all of this is to the benefit of the viewer. I don't expect to profit from any of this outside of donations and word of mouth.

Come to think of it I haven't seen any comparisons of the sound chips between the ps2 and ps1 when playing ps1 games. I think I have what I need to compare the two for games like FF9 at the very least.

They are going to be very subtle, but I promise they are there.

All of this gets into "emulation isn't perfect" but I'm not saying that your way of playing is less valid. I'm just a guy in their 30s trying to recapture a moment in their tweens when all of this was coming out.

@oceanotter If you could somehow record and upload a comparison of the two, I'd be really interested in hearing the differences!
@youshouldoit yeah I'll post it here on fedi
