#JeffSatur looked thoroughly impressed as well. And like #Nene said, her vocals were very stable.
I wonder if there were more individual performances from that group than Krista and R-Jing, and it was just edited down.
It looks like it was as a lot of the later acts also have their MVP voting sequences cut down.
Some of the editing, I'm not a fan of, but tbh, editing for these things is a tricky thing, especially with the sheer number of acts they have.
I am glad her vocal color is appreciated. She emphasized that she's not "the best" at singing and dancing, but to me, Elyn seems like a solid performer, and I liked her song. It was cute, and at points silly, but that was the goal. And she was the one who wrote it, on top of that.
It's clear she plans on improving her singing and dancing, and with that and the above, I think she'd bring a lot to a group.
Pffft oh no, the flirting puns have begun. Cute is spelled Y-O-U.
The mood whiplash from that to the vote.
This episode is two and a half hours long? Are all of them this long?
Aaah! Elyn made MVP for Dream! And then immediately started bawling.
But, like I said, she brought a lot to the table, so I think she earned it.
I think it was Kittie who was the most stable for 4 Good Students? Yibing however, I think really nailed that last bit. I like Emma's vocal style overall.
Okay but, Emma's solo. She was worried since it was her own choreo, that it wouldn't be good. She's too humble.
It's interesting watching the mentors focus on their notes while watching the performance.
Also hold up: Mao Xiu Ling and Mao Xiu Ting are now my favorite dancers among the contestants. Their extra performance was so polished and impressive. And it really showed off what they can do. Plus, looking at the credit overlay, it was their own choreo as well.
I'm not surprised that Emma got MVP. I'm getting the feeling that if only one "extra stage" is shown, that person is probably the MVP. Either bc they edited out the others, or bc they were the ones getting pulled forward to show more of their abilities, and that tips them over in points.
I'm very happy that the twins Mao Xiu Ling and Mao Xiu Ting both got MVP.
Oop I vaguely spoiled myself by clicking on the voting portion of the wetv app. I don't even know all the contestants yet, and I see a bunch are gone.
Ah well. I will probably vote anyway at some point, prior to completing this, bc if it's all 2 hours 30ish minutes, I'm not gonna manage to watch it all before it's done.
Oh we skipped on of the Barbie Girl's Barbie titles.
I cannot read the credits for this performance. lol
Okay for group performances, this is my favorite. Powerful dancing and their vocals weren't shaky either.
And Yean's vocals. Oh my gods. She's very clearly impressed Jeff multiple times.
Qiao Yi Yu's comment that they already feel like an idol group holds. They've all placed highly in some competitions in the past. And it shows.
Yessssss Yean got MVP.
Pream's dancing was great during her extra stage. But also everyone else is an amazing dancer.
Yean's vocals though, she's my fave vocalist so far, and it makes sense she placed first in what sounded like it was a national competition?
I don't trust that this is an actual 15 minute break in the show? Apparently it actually was. During which Jackson decided to hang out with one of the cameramen.
Oh I think I've heard of Tegan and Kaylen before. Maybe even seen their videos from when they were younger.
It's gonna be awkward having one MVP out of the two of them.
They're each doing extra stages, which makes sense.
Tegan's solo/extra stage just gave me goosebumps. Super smoky vocals. And everyone dancing along!
Pfft Kaylen brought all the mentors in. It was a fun stage.
I can see why Kaylen got it. But that was also a tough decision imo.
Avex is another group that seems very polished and almost complete.
That and Akina apparently debuted in the past.
Mindy already is a debuted group, though they're hoping for more from the show.
I like their style, especially for a debut. It has a distinct vibe. Also, as a debut song, it shows off the individual members as well as their group cohesion.
Aha! One of the members (Praew - "the muscle") is the acrobatic dancer of the group, which had both Ten and Jackson excited.
I think Praew is my fave. Even outside the acrobatics, she has stage presence, and a confident, powerful dance style.
Coco for Avex -- breaking the pattern of an extra stage being a predictor for MVP. (Rei was the member selected for an extra stage.)
I'm surprised that there was no extra stage with Mindy, but there was a really cute part, where one of the members told Jackson that she's an #Aghase and that Jackson was always her bias.
Anyway, MVP Praew.
As she should be. I hope she and Mindy go far -- even if they don't win here.
Ouch, the concrit was helpful, but one of the contestants took it hard.
Shye (who isn't the person from the last paragraph) is a singer songwriter, and with the little bit I saw, I kinda... want to hear more of what she's written? I feel like she was nervous on stage which didn't help her for the competition. Even still, if her music style is what I suspect, I'm interested.
Help, Mamcù is an incredible vocalist. My jaw dropped. Mike's jaw dropped. A bunch of the contestants' jaws dropped.
She's got a preexisting fandom among the contestants, from her time The Voice.
Jeff like: everything is perfect, wrt vocals.
Unfortunately she didn't dance at all, and while she agreed to dance later, that did impact her votes -- if possibly by only one.
And no spoiler warning bc obviously...
Mike: "The MVP of this... person, is Mamcù""
So far, I'm surprised that 2/3 of the original top 3 (J Jazzster and Krista) have been staying-- though now that I understand better, I get it, bc it's 3 of the top 9 and not ranked.
Tegan and Kaylen get to stick together as top 9. Yean and Pream of Barbie Girls both made it.
Praew! Yes good. It's funny once Jeff said the contestant was Thai, one of the Barbie Girls Vita started pointing to her.
Emma from Dream.
And finally: Coco from Avex.
Okay so there's also another aspect of the show where the mentors will pick an individual that will challenge a specific member of the top 9, who they also choose, 1:1.
If the top 9 member loses, they will be replaced with the challenger.
Also the challenges are split between vocal and (freestyle) dancing.
As an aside, this section has confirmed that there are a lot of extra stages we didn't see -- as they are showing snips of a bunch of individual stages that weren't earlier in the episode.
Jeff has chosen Mamcù to challenge Yean.
Ten chose Panda -- who he felt didn't get to shine bc of her heels -- against Pream. (Both of which are Barbie Girls, and don't want to go up against each other.) Also he feels they are similar in style and wants to see how they grow competing with each other.
Mike chose Yui to go up against Emma as he sees their styles as similar, so he considers them going against each other interesting.
Nene picked Mamcù (again, as she is already going up against Yean), to go up against Krista. So Mamcù is challenging both of them.
Jackson has chosen Kanompang (of Barbie Girls) to go up against Avex's Coco.
Panda and Pream still don't wanna, but are also comforting each other.
And we're already seeing one of the challenges now. Yui and Emma.
Mike was right, Yui and Emma do have similar styles.
It's a bit hard to pick a fave bc of it. At first I was more for Yui bc she seemed to adapt more, and she definitely had more charisma during their clash.
But when the stong picked up, Emma adapted and picked up speed with it, looking more dynamic.
Time for Panda and Pream.
I'm here for Panda. Dunno if she'll win but I liked her style more. Pream definitely showcased her skill more, so...
Okay but what's the point of being like: Freestyle means you can't prepare, then having the third group compete with the same song used in battle 2?
Ffff Coco is killing it, imo. I like the isolation at the very beginning. And she started with this casual but charismatic vibe that never lost its charisma as she sped up. And she did multiple styles to boot. (I saw that waacking.)
Which is not to say that Kanompang didn't do well too. But I was stuck on Coco.
Emma for battle 1. Not super surprising -- as I said, she seemed to adapt better to the song changing and in that process kinda left Yui in the dust.
Pream and Panda: Pream, and also not surprising.
Coco and Kanompang: I dunno which to expect bc I was so struck by Coco I wonder if I missed something big by Kanompang... which is probably why I shouldn't be surprised that Coco won.
Vocal battle next episode -- and apparently you get to pick your rival's song. Which... interesting.
It's definitely a way challenge the vocalists, as, if they know each other's strengths, they can pick something that doesn't play to them.
I guess we'll see if they actually use that strategy.
I was completely wrong, I explain here:
Oh, I was completely wrong about how the songs are picked for the vocal battle. The person picks a song (that their rival performed?), for themselves. Which, given the lineup, is going to be a challenge.
So, does this mean Mamcù will have two songs given to her to perform?
I mean, given what I've seen, gl to both Yean and Krista for finding a weak spot on Mamcù, bc I'm not sure she has one.
Follow up on Shye— she is on Spotify, and I am not disappointed with her music.
Her listed inspirations are: a mixture of dreamy and electronic pop, 2000s pop-punk as well as 80s British rock bands.
Some of her songs vibe as a little goth and 90s alternative influenced to me, though the above cocktail could do that, too. And a few on the 9LIVES album would not sound out of place on The Craft’s soundtrack. Or Foxfire.
