11th finished book of the year:
The Serpent & The Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent

4.5/5⭐️

I didn’t know what to expect with this book, other than it was highly recommended to TOG and Fourth Wing lovers. Having read it, I can enthusiastically suggest that yes, if you loved those books, you should definitely give this a read.

The pacing is excellent, with slowly unravelling plot lines and commendably detailed world building being revealed in a satisfying manner. The larger politics of the various houses that make up Obitraes plays out in a way that is balanced nicely against the internal relationships at play between the main characters.

The magic system is also quite well thought out, particularly the way in which it ties into the perceived dark and light balance in the pantheon of gods. I appreciated that there was just enough exposition about the origins of magic and the way in which these higher powers related, without adding too much extra bulk to the story.

Overall, a really satisfying read and I look forward to delving deeper into the world.

@jerry Thanks for this review! I have this book on my radar because I really enjoyed Fourth Wing, so I want to give it a try. But it has vampires, right? Does it have dark elements?
@noisydeadlines yes, I'd say it very much has dark elements - in terms of content warning, I'd say primarily generic vampire related ones (violence, blood, death, etc) and references to (but not depictions of) sexual assault and torture
@jerry Thanks for the content warnings! It's nice to know what to expect if I start reading it
@noisydeadlines you're perfectly welcome, happy to help ^-^
