Launching Mastodon and not being able to see anything about the Baltimore incident might finally mark the time when I need to build a Fediverse service around the news.

@aulia sure but it's not surfaced at all in my timeline if I don't open it at the correct time exactly.
@dimillian yep, that’s how it is when there’s no algorithm. You catch it on time, when someone reposts them, or you miss it entirely. A news tab needs recency factor aside from popularity.
@dimillian that's why i integrated a RSS column in my client ^^

@textoo well actually https://github.com/Dimillian/IceCubesApp/pull/2006

But RSS is not enough IMO

@dimillian yes, it misses the social part, it only relies on your own choices of sources. But it's quite convenient in my case
@textoo @dimillian RSS uses the most sophisticated algorithm in the universe. Your 🧠
@thai_d_v @textoo IMO RSS + sorting it with some social context would be nice.
@dimillian The Guardian and the BBC covered it, albeit a bit late.
@dimillian
Who are you following though?
You don't need a new instance to see recent news, you simply need to follow the right sources and hashtags, surely?
@dimillian
Also … you know there's a Baltimore bridge incident … search for 'baltimore'?
@negative12dollarbill If I opened Mastodon first I would have probably not heard about it.
@dimillian
OK so who are you following? Any major news sources like The Guardian for instance?
@negative12dollarbill I can follow as much news source I want, I follow also a ton of other people, so there is a high chance that if I don't open my timeline at the right time, I'll miss it.

@dimillian
So how would creating a news-focused instance help with that?

Also it's a HUGE story with amazing visuals, this story is not going to go away, we'll be talking about it for a week.

Are you concerned mostly about the timeliness?

@dimillian I saw @mekkaokereke post first, then The Guardian.

It’s still not on https://feditrends.com/ or my feedseer https://news.feedseer.com/
