Chevron Will Pay Record Fines for Oil Spills in California

The penalties come after an investigation by The Desert Sun and ProPublica found that companies were profiting from illegal spills and California’s oversight of the industry was lax.

Oil Companies Are Profiting From Illegal Spills. And California Lets Them.

California may be a global leader on combating climate change, but state regulators have allowed companies like Chevron to make millions from inland oil spills that can endanger workers and damage the environment.

@ProPublica That’s a good start. Now they should do even more.
@ProPublica I worked for an engineering firm that developed various oil extraction facilities in this area (don’t work in that industry anymore, I felt guilty). Once, when looking at a site through Google earth to do some pre planning, I saw this huge black shape near the area where we were supposed to build. I figured it was a maps error, and if it wasn’t, there’s no way a spill of that size was still there. But when I went out to visit the site, out of curiosity, I crested the little hill to see, and sure enough, there was a lake of crude oil just sitting there.
@ProPublica
I worked on an NIH/SAMHSA study about the impacts of the Gulf Oil spill. It changed me forever.
There's no amount of money that could possibly give those people back their lives & livelihoods, or repair the damage done to what God created to be beautiful & healthy.
