@yurnidiot I love the standing hops lol
@Pineywoozle @yurnidiot Right? It's impossible not to smile, watching this!
@kimlockhartga LoL Yeah, I just sent it to two buds who hate social media. 🥰

@yurnidiot

Cats have imaginations. The chase invisible mice, shadow box, knock things off tables for the thrill of seeing a small thing rolling away...

The ability to pretend and rehearse is something we have in common.

I wonder what is the most distant relative of humans that can play in this way? I think a case could be made for birds. What about fish? hmm.

Of course something analogous could be happing but we simply can't recognize it in our more distant relatives.

@yurnidiot @futurebird Isn’t play present in most mammals? So interesting to wonder about. Where are our animal biologists?
@futurebird @yurnidiot tbh really surprised this post has cats and humans and birds and fish but not ants!!!
@futurebird @yurnidiot I've heard Corvids play - they were dinosaurs once [sic].
@futurebird @yurnidiot I saw one article suggesting that bumblebees will play with beads, and another that captive octopus will play with items in their tanks. I think play capacity varies on the complexity of survival skills needed. If you are an armored siphon feeder, like a clam, you don't need much brain. Hunters, prey animals that survive by fleeing & social animals depend more on learned skills. Thus more need for practice, adaptation & planning.
@futurebird @yurnidiot octopi and some squid are probably the farthest relatives in the evolutionary tree that we know play and entertain themselves.
@futurebird If you’ve ever seen Australian magpies at play you’d agree that there is definitely a case for birds.
@yurnidiot /me cranks The Angels - Shadow Boxer…
