@arstechnica I think the more important question is "is our information any safer with any other social media platform based outside China?" My guess is the answer is no. The only barrier to China having FB or Twitter's info is an upfront fee that's the same fee built into the money it gives Bytedance on the regular. The US needs to be consistent on this - either leave them all alone, or apply the same scrutiny to ALL the social media platforms...

If you don't want to read the article, the conclusion isn't at subtle as the text here indicates. i.e. , Yes, TikTok is controlled by the CCP.

But, personally, I'd rather see Fox News banned.

To me, having a major *news* outlet controlled by the GOP is worse than having an *entertainment* app controlled by the CCP.

China doesn't need to do anything to "influence" or "control" or "manipulate" Tiktok, to achieve its one big goal; to be the world's number one super power.
Republicans, with the help of Putin, are slowly destroying America. As they move towards lies, violence, and stand in the way of progress, and greening their economy, China gets more powerful.
As the saying goes, don't interrupt your enemies when they are busy destroying themselves.
