#opensource version of #discord ?
I see some great collaborations being carried out on Discord (text chat with many channels). I want to start a project that would benefit from this collaboration but don't want to use Discord - concerns of ownership of data & corporate moving of goalposts primarily. Does anyone have experience of using an OS (open source not Mac mess) version? I feel Mastodon could in theory work for this but would like a 'for dummies' set of instructions if so. Thank you 😀

@Niall
Matrix (specifically the Element web front-end) is exactly what you want as a drop-in FOSS Discord replacement.

That said, getting all your friends onboard is another story. If they are similarly concerned with proprietary software and data ownership, that's one thing. But for normal users, Discord is a hard habit to break.

@tomnardi thanks. Yes, a hard habit indeed. The network effect is powerful. Trying to get people onto Signal rather than whatsapp is crazy difficult.
