Them: #TikTok is an important too for small businesses, and for sharing content that we can't find on mainstream media.

Also Them: Check out this thirsty hamster video.

Listen, I like senseless TikTok videos as much as the next person. But maybe let's not act like the platform is the last bastion of free speech. Besides, that's Twitter anyway.

@drewhall Idk how much people pretend that TikTok is any better than other social media. I think the biggest problem people have is the targeted approach when other platforms are also engaging in privacy violations and propaganda. We desperately need comprehensive data protection legislation that targets all social media. Also I think people are enraged that a House that’s been completely inept this session was able to pass this, of all things, with 2/3rds majority so quickly.

@TopNotchSwords No doubt we need comprehensive data legislation. You'll get nor argument from me on that.

On the flip side of the house argument, doesn't the fact that a historically inept house was able to pass this so quickly say something? Certainly Meta, X, etc are guilty of data indiscretions, but there is plenty of room for TikTok to be guilty of worse and run by a government that has an adversarial relationship with this country.

@drewhall @TopNotchSwords Tbh I’m not sure what it says. People I despise (e.g. Matt Gaetz) voted against it but so did others that I usually support (progressives). I think the fact that TikTok itself is based in Singapore and LA (parent company ByteDance is in China), it’s CEO is Singaporean, and they offered to host US data in Texas shows at least a willingness to compromise. I personally have found great creators on there but that doesn’t mean the platform isn’t worse like you suggested.
