Is anyone else tired of the doom posts on Lemmy? - Lemmy.World

When scrolling Lemmy (compared to reddit in the past), all I see is doom and gloom / news. I don’t see interesting conversations or comments to read. Occasionally I’ll find something, and I’ve been contributing more, but there’s just so much doom that it fills my feed. I’ve had to unsubscribe from many communities bc it’s just doom news reposts… Is it just me?

It probably reflects the minds of the people. With good reason. It will take proactive curation if you feed to avoid it. Good luck
It mostly feels like bots throwing up whatever need content they find based.on popular topics.
Sure, but they were popular topics to begin with. Things are getting worse for certain segments of society, and it’s actually a good thing that there is a sobering outlook and not willfully ignoring their plight.

Yeah, times are kinda rough right now

I recommend [email protected] but it’s not super active, about a post a day

That community is also guilty tbh. Sorry for bringing this up, but I saw the other day about “Children school food debt” or something like that on that community, and I was like, what? How is that uplifting at all?

Ok, I didn’t see the post you’re talking about, so idk

The posts I’ve seen have been uplifting to me

Yeah, it’s hard to see the “orphan crushing machine temporarily stopped” headlines as a positive for me, too. I had to stop looking at that community. It didn’t seem they were particularly open to feedback about those articles, either.
I love the whole “orphan crushing machine” term. It’s a great way to describe the ridiculous phenomenon of framing bad things as good things.
[email protected] is also good

Oh yeah, that one’s great too

Nice, joined.

I find that eventually those kind of posts end up filled with people who either have to explain why the thing is actually bad, or “that’s nice, but what about this thing that’s bad!”. To every post.

Hopefully that doesn’t happen here, and I’ll try not to be negative :)

It’s not just you, but it’s not just Lemmy either. Anywhere I go, I need to prune subs or else my feed becomes more and more pessimistic.

I think as a species we have a mental bias that focuses on what needs changing and not what’s okay as it is.

I’m convinced that we can address needs for changes while not being doomsday cultists either; I’m pretty much doing it as much as I can while not being a drama queen about it and generally shutting the fuck up.

But it doesn’t get me much attention which I guess is what the cultists are after.

People are tiring of the shouting, though. The cultists will find out eventually that people can't be mad all the time if you want your shit to work.
I hope so… we need more discussing to help everyone find what they can do and that requires more listening and less shouting indeed.

Nazism lasted 22 years. (Counting the Beer Hall Putsch to WWII surrender.)

Buckle up. It can and will get much worse, at least here in the US.

The plus side is that, even among the Nazis, there were innumerable examples of people doing good with their own two hands. No one can stop you from doing that.

I’m like 90% sure the actual hard in doomsayers are paid posters hired by the fossil fuel lobby.

It’s become obvious that Millennials and Zoomers see fossil fuels as a curse upon the land and if they get into power they’ll do everything they can to kill the industry outright, so what’s there to do instead except to burn them out to the point that they give up?

Where they can’t get approval, they’ll instead force apathy.

Edit: see below convo with doomsayer insisting they’re saying anything worthwhile when they push the fossil lobby line.

I’m a millennial and have been called a “doomer” because I realize it’s essentially too late. I know people don’t like to think that, but the reality is that nothing of any significance has or is being done to curb global warming. You couple that with the fact we’ve literally poisoned everything, including ourselves, with no way to clean it up and I don’t see the quality of life for humans being great after 2050. You can blow me off as a shill if you’d like, but this is just reality. Additionally, my generation and gen z have a significant number of fascists and the pollution continues, so I don’t think that’s the solution you’re hoping for. I’d love to be wrong, but that isn’t backed by the facts.

I mean the Ottawa conference literally led to cutting temperature increase by the end of the century in half but sure kid, nothing of substance has been done.

There is nothing the fossil lobby loves more than for you to be pissy about your right to give up. You’re not just letting them win, you’re getting amgy with people pointing out that you’re letting them win.

Where was I angry? I was adding to the conversation and you decided to be a whiny asshole with your sad attempt at belittling me (kid, really?). You’re quite pathetic, bud.
Because if someone is pathetic it’s definitely not the punk going to bat for the fossil lobby’s position, definitely not.
Lol, get a life guy.

It’s become obvious that Millennials and Zoomers see fossil fuels as a curse upon the land

That’s quite a hasty generalization. May be true on Lemmy but not in the real world. Especially when it comes to millenials.

Not really, millennials and Zoomers overwhelmingly poll as either seeing the climate crisis as the biggest issue or as it being second biggest next to the affordable housing crisis,

In both cases, the fossil fuel industry is at least partially to blame

Yeah but that’s not the same as them seeing fossil fuels as a curse. A huge portion of them are more than happy to own a car.

Having to own one to be able to do anything but stay home isn’t the same as being more than happy to own one.

Get some Not Just Bikes up in yo head.

Car culture is still very much alive and well among zoomers and millenials. Your generalization doesn’t represent the reality. I’d say that around half of my male friends like owning a car. The rest of them either cant afford owning one or don’t want to because they live in a big city. Even those are more than happy to drive around with one they borrowed from their parents.
I couldn’t find any reasonable statistics or survey data talking about whether people prefer cars or other modes of transport and why, but the general theme amongst Gen Z in particular is ecological awareness and sustainability, so it wouldn’t make sense for a lot of those people to drive cars just because they prefer the car itself, other than being able to get around places quickly or feeling safe on the street etc.

the general theme amongst Gen Z in particular is ecological awareness and sustainability

That’s the difference between stated and realized preferences. If I were to answer a poll I’d say those things are important to me aswell but I still drive a diesel truck. Just because a person says something is important to them it doesn’t mean every aspect of their life is going to reflect that.

How am I supposed to doom scroll without doom posts?

; )

Always plenty to be gloomy about, I tend to block those communities though, not because I’m in denial about it, I already know to vote Green or Democratic for like my whole life, you don’t need to convince or sway me.
The bubble has burst, none of the fun communities I subbed to when I came over have any active users left anymore. It’s all the same 3-4 people posting news and rhetoric.
Be the change, become the active user
but that’s going to need some effort. The bots and marketing agencies did all the post on reddit. I just wanna scroll and complain. 😭

Activity has actually been picking up lately imo.

Specifically which communities do you think died out?

All of them that are not AI, news, gaming, Linux or technology in general?
That’s not specific (or true) though, there are plenty of active niche communities, especially those for localities. Which communities would you like to be more active?

I know that Lemmy has a fairly small range of interests, but I don’t know of any communities that were once highly active and have since gone dormant.

He said the bubble has burst and there were fun communities when he first came over that are no longer active. I’m asking for an example, because according to my recollection, there never really were active communities outside of the topics you mention.

And there actually are a good number of active communities on other topics. [email protected] comes to mind.

A lot of them are either bots or are working for some clickbait farm. You will eventually come to realize that you need to block the worse offenders.
I say there’s not enough Doom posting. RIP AND TEAR

Yes. This place is relentlessly negative, and I'm no sunny optimist myself.

I aggressively block communities and on some occasions, people who are obvious agenda pushers. It takes a mildly annoying amount of work to clear away the mess and keep it cleared, but it can be done. It's okay to block shit.

Where are the creators? The cosplayers? The rube goldberg machines made out of post it’s and shot glasses? The “I draw pictures by playing notes on a piano” people? The people porting Doom to a yoga mat? The “I made a car out of thrown out Crocs” people? The “I built a treadmill for my friend’s overweight insects” people?

This is the stupidest shit I could think of but people are out there making and doing weirder/amazing-er things… Where are those people in Lemmy? I browse All and it’s just politics, linux, and shit posts.

You've gotta start somewhere.

Consider that with both Reddit and Digg, their initial communities where mostly technical, and with time, the creative people slowly and gradually got in.

However IMO finding an active community within the diaspora of finicky servers and empty channels, makes it less alluring than a centralized service.

I simply hope that at some point, finding out communities will become easier.

Where are those people in Lemmy?

Also, for those few posts of creative stuff around here, where are the people to upvote and comment on it?

I’m still okay with a bit of politics discussion, but seeing US politics on timeline everyday?? I am NOT a US citizen and I DO NOT CARE about their politics at all. And the doomerism posting, so so tired of them.

That’s why I tend to follow casual community like !artshare, music related stuff, etc. I also made a community for japanese trains, though it’s my first time running a community so I’m kinda confused how to run the community.

I just blocked all the US-specific comms, it’s not too interesting to me and if its really big I just see it through national news and not through Lemmy.
Could you link to your trains community, please?

Hey I’m a musician/creator actually! I’m attempting to be the change I wish to see! I haven’t shared anything here because I treat Lemmy as more discussion oriented but on Mastodon I’ve shared my first Peertube upload.

I just refuse to be like those “pick me” people who are only on a platform in hopes of building their “brand”. I truly want to make friends here and if they happen to like my tunes when I occasionally share them that’s fucking dope for me. I’m seeing quite a few people like me too who are using the federation as more than the grind for fame. Overtime we will get the pick me’s, but I think we will get a lot of decent artists in it for artistry sake

Please do share your content though! Doesn't mean your entire presence here needs to be centred around it. :)
tanukitunes.com/channels/supersynthiamusic. I just uploaded, thanks for the encouragement!

For better or worse, they’re busy creating rather than being overly concerned about their platform.

I don’t how many times in my life I’ve thought “this thing I’m doing is really cool, I should share it!” And immediately follow it up with “yeah but why would I care if anyone else sees it? I’m doing this for me, not them.”

And as time goes on I think less and less about impressing other people and just take pleasure in my own skills and creations, and let me tell you, it’s way better this way.

I don’t how many times in my life I’ve thought “this thing I’m doing is really cool, I should share it!” And immediately follow it up with “yeah but why would I care if anyone else sees it? I’m doing this for me, not them.”

I feel this.

And as time goes on I think less and less about impressing other people and just take pleasure in my own skills and creations, and let me tell you, it’s way better this way.

But sharing isn’t necessarily about impressing people. I don’t know what it is you’re talking about, but whatever it is could help someone learn something, bring them enjoyment, or some other impact that can make it worth while. Or on a more personal note, you might get those same benefits out of it as well.

Quite a few seem to be on Discuit, which is a lot more lighthearted.

The cosplayers?

I’m here, but I think I’m the only one to have posted in the last 6 months.

reddit had some decent cosplay discussion, but as far as i can tell, most of the community is just on instagram (and some youtube)
